Bathurst and the Twist!

This is a postcard from Bathurst, New Brunswick where our Lagaces lived before moving to Verdun, Quebec. Take a closer look and you’ll see that the movie “Twist All Night” with Louis Prima was showing at the Kent Theatre on Main Street. That means that this is probably Main St. Bathurst in the early 1960s.

Vintage theatre, 1960s, classic cars, wing fins

The Kent Theatre had opened in 1952 while Stedman’s was in business from 1934.

Here’s an excerpt from the movie “Twist all Night” – the twist starts about midway through!

Most of our Lagaces had left Bathurst during the 1950s, but in the 60s the twist was all the rage in Montreal too. I remember the big parties my parents gave in the basement playroom of our bungalow in Ville Lasalle and everyone would do the twist for hours.

At our house Chubby Checker was the King of the Twist. Take a look and you’ll know why!

  2. I’ve looked at some of your vintage postcards, i found all of them very interesting. I liked alot the one of St.Catherine street but my favorite was “bathurst And The Twist” because the place looks old, and i like to see old places for example I love to go to the old Montreal and old LaPrairie. I just like old places because we can see how it looked like before. Very interesting, did you get any new postcards?

    • Thank you for your comments, George. It’s always a great surprise to see a comment from a student!
I have hundreds of postcards – and I add a few every month. I’m publishing a few at a time – some on this blog and some on our All Things Quebec class blog. I published this one of Bathurst because my uncle comes from there and he passed away on Monday when we were on our class trip to Ottawa.
I loved your family history article on Astro Taxi Company
