  1. My g-grandfather, Joseph Guillame PAQUETTE married Marie Brule in 1877 in St. Andre Avelin, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The marriage record says he was from Kantucky. Obviously, this is incorrect. While I have been looking at your site, I noticed that you refer to Kahnawake. I know I have quite a bit of Aboriginal blood and was wondering if any documents still exist that could be referenced for his birth in 1854, and if there is a website. I know it is a reach, but I have had no luck with him at all.

  2. Hello, my grand parents where native Adelard Lajeunesse and Yvonne Paquette. I do know they were married at Montebello QC, I am trying to learn more but I dont find them on any census, family search, roots web, archive nationl… If someone can help me please contact me.

  3. I am looking for the family of Louise Kwarakwantha otherwise known as Louise L’Iroquoise by the Hudson Bay Company born October 17, 1792. He was a HBC guide who was a Iroquois Indian and intermarried with our people.

    There is an extensive family throughout Treaty 6 and 8 who are the descendants of Louise Kwarakwantha or Kwarakwante. He came to Jasper House when he was around 19 years old and intermarried within the nearby tribes. I am looking for more information on his family at Caughnawaga where he was born.

    • I was told that my great grandmother Minnie Smith was part Akwesasne Mohawk. I’ve found records showing that Minnie lived Oneida County in New York. My uncle seemed uncertain, but thought that my Great Grandma Minnie could have lived on the St Regis reservation,. He told me that the reservation is around the United States/ Canada area, and that he keeps thinking she lives in Cornwall in Canada, although he was not completely certain. Minnie’s father’s name was Frank H Smith and her Mother’s name was Mary Philabaum. Frank was born in Croghan New York in 1877 and Mary was born in Lewis County on April 17, 1888. My Uncle says he believes the Akwesasne Mohawk ancestry is from the Smith side of our family. Does anyone recognized the people mentioned, and would they be able to provide with any info about them.   4. I am looking for these people…..

    Probably the greatest social success of all, however, has been made by young White Moon (Louis Smith) an Indian with a touch of German blood. Though not yet invited to pose before an easel and at present the chief attraction of a traveling medicine show, this young Indian of twenty-three has more than once been taken into New York parlors and charmed all. No picture can give any idea of his physical beauty and magnetism, which are most marked.

    White Moon has a mother, Kaheroton-Kwas (Weeping Corn Husk), and a cousin, Tsio-non-nio-wa-ne (Big Elk), who are at present traveling with him.

    New York Times September 12, 1897.

    Louis was on the reserve in 1943.
    He died after being struck by a car 08 Sep 1947.
    It is my understanding that he is buried in the cemetery on the reserve.

    I am looking for an obituary, burial information, anything I can find. Does anyone recognize these names?

    Louis Smith was also called Doc Smith and he had very bad eyesight. His mother was called Therese (Felicite) Kaherotonkwas. I can see them on the 1881 census. But where are they buried and where is the papa?

    I have been looking for so long. Can anybody please help?

  6. Our family oral history always assumed that Rose de Lima Lafontaine, born 1827 in Quebec, was the Mohawk in our lineage. But that does no longer seems to be the correct person. In fact, my gr. grandmother, Salome Riel, daughter of Pierre Napoleon Riel of Kanawake seems to be the Mohawk link. What do you think?

  7. I have a Daniel F. Gray born 1830 to unknown parents. He married Mary Frances Mead (b. 1830, Rockingham, VT) about 1854. The family is on the 1860 & 1870 census for Altona, NY. I believe Dan is on the 1850 Westminster, VT census living in a household not his own, as a laborer. His death certificate says he was born in Waterbury, VT but I haven’t found the records. Most of the family is buried in the Old Mooers Cemetery in NY where they spent the majority of their lives. The 1880 Dannamora, NY census shows Dan as a widower, living in a house hold other than his own. He died at the house of his daughter, Harriet, in August of 1900 in St Albans, VT where he was staying for the last six sick years of his life.

    Myself and other genealogists have looked into this family and can not find Dan’s parents. I have a list of deceased Gray’s in Akwesasne from the mission but need a connecting generation or two. If anyone can help me with these Gray’s I would be ever so grateful. It has been a brick wall for some time.

    I have more information if needed. Would appreciate communication. Dan and Mary were my g.g.g grandparents. Am looking to document them if possible. NOT looking for inclusion in any tribe, money, or etc.

    • Never any reply on this family no matter where I post. Everything on ancestry has been put there by me. I can not get back past Dan (Daniel) F. Gray. Grandmother said Mohawk blood comes through her family line and I have narrowed it down to the Gray family. Need help! If someone is able to go to Kahnawake or Akwesase and look into the parish registers I would be forever grateful but I suppose it would take someone who has genealogy as a life’s passion like me.         You have posted this question under the general Iroquois post. It would be helpful if you posted a message with the names of a couple and their children with approximate dates as a starting point. In addition, the Kahnawake records are online at ancestry.com however many (a majority) of the records are mis- transcribed. That is why I started a methodical record-by-record transcription in which I compare ancestry original records with bms2000 records. I do this in clippings of time from my full time job and caring for an ailing relative. You will see flurries of activity from time to time on the site but for the rest I leave your comments up so that others may help. Evelyn

  8. Hi! I’ve been doing my family tree for over 35 years now. Anytime I had to deal with the records in Quebec, I just wanted to bang my head against a wall. In 2005, I submitted my tree to the Quebec Metis Federation, based on my maternal information. On my father’s side, it was just brick wall after brick wall – so I never figured I would ever get anywhere.

    A few days after I submitted my tree, they contacted us asking if we knew you we were. Apparently I came from a long line of Huron Chiefs – the Vincents..

    So I continued to try to trace them. The biggest problem is the last name, and when it switched over to actually “Vincent”. I was ecstatic when I read your comment about trying to get all versions of all the surnames synchronized, I decided you would be my new Best Friend.

    I was able to discover that 2 of the Vincent went to go live in Kahnawake some where around 1812 – 1850. I have not yet been able to establish why, but I am still working on it. One of those 2 Vincents received a land grant for his role in the battle of chateauguay – despite the fact that he was native. That land grant is somewhere in what is now St. Hyacinthe. And that is my great great grand father. He married Henriette Lacoste. There is no record of that wedding. or actual birth certificates for their kids birth.

    I noticed you have Vincent listed on your list of surnames. Any information you have on the Vincents in your records, I would REALLY appreciate seeing, or hearing about.

  9. Im going out on a limb here .. But Ive been told I have 2 mohawk grandparents.. Im working with these following surname’s ( Pilote and Tessier) . My grandfather is Francois Xavier Tessier. I can not find much on them at all. Ive been at this for 5 years now.. And now hoping to dig alot deeper.Ive viewed all the surnames listed on this site and cant really find any matches. So maybe the myth of my Grandparents has been solved. But any help or good direction would help. I tryed Ancestry .ca. But nothing at all.. Thank for any reply or information…

    • Do you have any dates of birth? Or maybe a location? I have a decendant: 1. Josephte Lebeau, b. , m. Francois Tessier dit Laforest (aft 1792-) on February 16, 1724 in St Cuthbert, Quebec.
      Try just Googling the name or any associated names, ie wife or children.

    • In my researching of family I have come across the name Henriette who was born on Channel Island and married a Johnston Munro. (My descendants) You mention her mother was Rosa Anna. Johnston and Henriette had a daughter named Rosana which is why it peaked my interest. I found this info in 1871 Canadian census and they were living in Paspebiac. Not sure if it’s the Henriette but will take your info and see what I can track down with the Tessier name.

  11. I have been looking for my aboriginals roots also. My Grandparents were Alfred Guenette Jr., ans Antonia Brassard. My greatgrandmother was Eloise Perron married to Dammasse Guenette. All were from the province of Quebec. That information is from my father’s side. My mother also came from the province of Quebec. My grandfather was Andre Perreault married to Julia Lacousse. They were from the sub district of Bouchette. My greatgrandfather was Desire Perreault from the same sub district. Where can I found my aboriginal lineage? All this information dates back to the mid 1800’s, to early 1900’s.

    • On the Brassard name: Try changing the spelling. Back then few could spell correctly and even the priests recorded different spellings. I have an Isaac Urbain Brossard, who arrived from France in 1653 as part of the “Great Rookie” of Montreal. The surname was also spelled Broussard and Brassard.
      He married Urbaine Hodiau dit Lafleche in Montreal on April 19, 1660. He was 27 and Urban Odiau (notice the spelling here) was just 16. She was the daughter of Sebastian Odio and Marie Monier. The marriage took place in Notre-Dame, Montreal. The bride and groom signed the marriage contract before the notary Benign Basset on April 3, 1660. All parents were absent from the ceremony.
      He had at least 7 children that I know about, but there were probably more.

      1. Jeanne Brossard, b. 1663, m. Henri Catin, d. 1744
      2. Jean Brossard, b. 1665, m. Catherine Richard in Port Royal, Acadia (?)

      5. Marie Madeleine Brossard, b. 1676, m. François Campeau (maker of edge-tools), d. April 9, 1729. * My line: The Campeau (Campo) family were intermarried later. A son, Francois Campeau, Jr. eventually settled in Detroit, in 1735.

      7. Claude Brossard, b. 1681, m. Barbara Hébert, d. 1728

      There is a street named Brossard in Montreal honors his memory.

      In the 1700’s-1800’s, it was no longer accepted to be married to a METIS or or Indian. Many intermarried, but did not record their status. My own ancsters refused to record their METIS status.

        • I have Paquet dit Lavalle’s. Issac, Charles, Andre, Barthelemi, Marguerite (b. 1805, St Marc Sur-Richelieu) who married whom married Emmanuel Lussier.

          Chartier’s are Guillaume married to Marie Faucon and daughter, Marie, b. 1676, Pointe Aux Trembles who married Bernard Brouillet.

          • Hi Jennifer, I may have a little bit of information for you. I’m here looking for more information on the same family. There are several variations of the spelling (Chartier/Carter/Sharkey/Sorkee/Shorkey) and they passed the same given names on through the generations so the full names can be confusing, but they are different people. From records I have found, there is a written letter stating that Aurelia Sharkey was Mohawk. It does not state whether she was full-blooded, however. I’ve since hit a brick wall, as it seems the censuses record their heritages as “White” and they were Catholic. Many of the Chartier family stayed in Upstate NY or Quebec, but there are relatives living in the Midwest. I moved to Kansas City almost six years ago and I was certain I had no family out here but after researching I found my distant relatives in the Sharkey family, and they live here in Kansas and Missouri. There are also some that are still living in Momence, IL, as far as I know. Hope this helps!

But I grew up learning that I had a great, great and possible 3rd great grandmother, Louise Chartier. She was a full blooded Mohawk woman from the sub tribe of Caughnawagas.   12. I am looking for a Thomas (Tom) Garland (b. and d. unknown) married to Mary ?. They had a least 2 children, a son who lived in the Detroit area, and a daughter Helen who married Ernest Littlejohn. Helen was born October 13, 1909 and died October 9, 1982. Helen had at least 4 children, Ernest, a daughter, Eugene, Wayne.
    I am told that Helen as a young lady, would visit friends and family in the Kahnawake area.
    Any information on Thomas Garland and daughter Helen would be appreciated.

  13. Looking for Joseph Blais b. 1844 , Sarah Ann Nolan b. 1847-connected to Lewis, Cook, Thompson- Catholic-grew up with RedJacket on wall, bust of Hiawatha, told of the longhouse, numerous stories, along with a wampum belt telling the story of the coversion of traditional beliefs to Christianity(this belt disappeared while military life sent us across the Pacific), still looking for it? My Grandmother told me the tribes were disbanned, but to always remember-so I have and I’ve searched without success. A long time ago I found a Joseph Blais b. 1844 on a Nippssing(Spell?) listing, but did not print this and since cannot find info again. I think Joseph might have been Huron, but Sarah must have been Mohawk, Seneca otherwise we would not have RedJacket or Hiawatha hanging on te walls-descent was thru Mothers family-matrilinial. Sarah and Joseph had quite a feel children, one being Nellie b. 1875, my GGrandmother, born in Vermont, so I sent for BC-no race listed? Nothing found on my family prior to 1880-the census lists them as white, but they weren’t! They spoke their native language and all of the history had been wriiten down, but destroyed by small children after my GG had passed. At a loss here, any info would be appreciated-Thank You

Ida’s last name when she lived in Kahnawake was Roberts. Ida is living now in NC. She just told me some stories. One was about a boyfriend she had who died while working on the bridge. She also told me she had a boyfriend by the name of Mike Delisle. I guess if he is alive he would be in his 90’s now. I would like to find some info on that also. Ida had three brothers. Frank, Joey and Dave and a sister who died in the St. Lawrence river when she was a teen. I think there was another child who died as a baby. I love the stories she can remember but would love to write all this down and have it for my children. We grew up attending Pow wows here in NY and still carry on Native tradition. She was married to a Louis Alary. Her parents were Joseph Langevin and a native lady (different name variations – Christine (anglicized) or Kanistine or Lucie Mijakwat. They were Algonquin from Mattawa, Kippewa, Nippising, Temiskaming or Maniwaki. These are all the locations that I have come across and are attached to different records of my ancestors.

  20. Hi there I am researching my great great grandfathers family my mother told me that he was iraquois from the hawkesbury ontario area . His name (norman williams smith) and was married to (mida) they had a son named (norman harry. smith) who
    married ( mary minerva barr) and had a son (gordon percy williams smith) who was born in Carleton ontario in 1900.

  23. Greetings. I am looking for information on my great-grandfather, Alfred (Arthur) McComber. His Naturalization Records show that he was born on 14 Oct 1848 in Kaknawagge. The earlier U.S. census records I was able to track down show his name as Arthur. He died on 17 Nov 1936 in Hibbing, MN, USA.   31. We are related to the Dumouchel line of the Leclerc, Tessier and Archmount familes. Our x’s great grandfather was Benard Dumouchel. Some sites have the metis notation next to: Tessier, Dumouchel and Leclerc. If anyone has any information on this it would be very much appreciated.   35. I’m looking for information on my grandfather, Augie Whitecloud Gomez, and his adoptive parents/family, Joseph and Elizabeth Whitecloud Danay from Caughnawaga.

    Joseph R. Whitecloud Danay (1867-1912). Whitecloud may have been a stage name. Married Elizabeth Stacey Diebow (?) (1866-deceased) in 1888. Family left Caughnawaga and moved to Philadelphia around 1900. 1910 US Census shows Elizabeth had 10 children, 6 of whom were living. Death certificate for Joseph shows burial place as Adirondack Junction. Children include:

    1. Augustine (Augie) Whitecloud Gomez (1889-1966). Married Marjorie Flory in 1939. Performed in wild west shows and acted in westerns. Gomez taken as stage name for boxing; also shown as Onteveros.
    2. Annie Danay (1889-1948). Married John M Jocks in 1907.
    3. Frank James Danay (1895-1973)
    4. Ida WhiteCloud (1895-Deceased); attended Carlisle, 1910
    5. Peter Gabriel Whitecloud Danay (1899-1984). Married: Anna Beauvais (1815-Deceased) in 1935.
    6. Katheryne Nenosa Danay (1902-1905)
    7. Thersa Eyota Danay (1904-1905)
    8. Margaret Rose Whitecloud (1908-1992). Married George Kauka (1899-1964) in 1924.

Her name was Mary Smoke she was born in 1925 and died in 1967 she married George W. Woodman. There are rumors he was native too but not full blooded and it’s questionable which tribe he belonged to. Mary’s parents were Phillip Ahentaritha Smoke, born 1895 died 1958 and her mother was Annie Tetikten Arquette born 1903 died 1984. Any help would be appreciated thank you.

  40. Hi, I am looking for information on a Mathilde Lacroix who married Joseph & or Joachim Lariviere. Mathilde Lacroix is my Great Great Grandmother, I have found records of her and Joseph for the birth and marriages of their children, but no records on their marriage, so I am unable to confirm who here parents were. I believe that Mathilde is either full or part Algonquin, I had my Fathers DNA tested and he came back 20% Algonquin and my 1st cousin had his DNA tested and it showed he also had 1 allele from the Algonquin in the Maniwaki area.
    I believe she was born approx 1830, her husband, Joseph Lariviere was born March 19 1823 in Mirabel, Deux-Montagnes, Québec, Canada. Their son, my Great Grandfather was Antoine Lariviere, born Nov 13 1859 in Maniwaki, Quebec, Canada. I also found a reference my Mathilde Lacroix in a book from Bouchette, Quebec about all the founding families. In that book I was able to trace my paternal grandmother back to Mathilde Lacroix, but no reference to her parents in that book or her marriage.
    I also have one other piece to the puzzle, in the 1970’s the government gave my Grandfather a 3 foot birch bark canoe replica that they said sat in Parliament for over 50 years. It was given to a Governor General as a gift by an Algonquin Chief. Parliament was apparently cleaning house, so they wanted to return it to the Chief’s family and they traced the canoe back to my Grandmother (who had since passed away). Over time the information regarding the canoe has been lost and so with my Grandfather also now passed away, we have no way to confirm names or exact dates. I now have the canoe and would Love very much to connect it to my family to complete the story.
    I have used the Quebec Genealogy Dictionary and these 2 websites, geneologyquebec.com and genealogie.umontreal.ca with greet success to confirm my entire paternal family tree with the exception of Mathilde Lacroix. any help you could offer would be sincerely appreciated.

Marguerite’s great grandmother was Jeanne Radagonde Lambert 1621-1693. Jeanne was my 9th great grandmother, Her father was Jean Antoine Lambert 1591-1671 and HER mother was Marguerite Henri (Amerindienne) Mik Mak Membertou 1585-1679 from Port Royal, NS Mik Mak Nation.
    Marguerite’s father was Grand Chief Henri(baptismal name) Mik Mak Mi’kmaq Tribe Membertou . 1507-1611. Her mother was Marie Radagonde Lambert Abenaki Tribe Membertou. 1532-1598. The above were my 11th great grandparents. Google the internet for Grand Chief Henri Membertou. There were a few Indian Chiefs in his family.     Do you have ANNE COUVENT (Convent) in your tree? This name could hook you up to European Royalty. Through her and my MESSIER family, I traced my roots to CHARLEMAGNE.

    I have 148 Picards , 1 Sylvestre, 22 Prevost in my tree My 10th GGF was Jean (Sieur de la Geoye) Picard Huppe 1559-1643 from Bretagne, France.

    My 8th GGF was Elie dit Laviolette Prevost 1642-1694 born in Guyanne, France and died in Montreal. He was a Carignan Soldier and his wife was a Fille du Roi, Marie Pothier 142-1681

    zero Destroismaison.

      You have many Picards. Wow! 148 Picards.
      I have 32 Langlois. 26 Gagnon. 25 Montpetit. 24 Picard. 24 Roy, etc. and a few Prévost.
      I’m from Destroismaisons dit Picard which eventually became only Picard.
      But, there are 2 other Picard families in my family tree like Jacques Hugues Picard dit Lafortune (1627-1707) from Dieppe.
      In my family tree, I have Michel Lefebvre dit Lassiseraye, Metis from Trois-Rivières.
      I have the Bedards and the Martels in the Huron Registry in St.-Ambroise-de-la-Jeune-Lorette.
      There’s Angele St.Louis who married in 1826 at the mission of Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours in the Seigneurie de la Petite Nation near Montebello, Québec.
      And some persons from Oka included in my family tree.
      I have 54 Filles du Roi and 7 Carignan soldiers in my family tree.
      There’s Louis Hébert and Zacharie Cloutier. There’s Jacques Archambault (1605-1688) who dug the first well on the Island of Montreal in 1653 under the request of M. De Maisonneuve. There’s also Anne Godefroy whose 2 brothers Thomas and Jean served under Champlain in the 1620s.
      I have over 3300 persons and 1090 family names in my family tree. Native, French, English, German, Swiss, Dutch, Belgian, Mulatto. All interesting.
      The parents of Marie Olivier Sylvestre Manitouabeouich (1624-1665) who married Martin Prévost were Roch Manitouabeouich and Oueou Outchibahanoukoueou.

Also I saw that you have Bedards and Martels from St Ambrose near Valcartier . They are on my fathers side Last name Wood. I have the Vaillancourt’s back to the 1500s.           Genevieve Destroismaisons (1682-?1711) was a daughter of Philippe Destroismaisons who had married a Fille du Roi Martine Crosnier in 1669 near Québec City. Genevieve Destroismaisons married Robert Vaillancourt (1678-?1749) on 28 September 1704 in Montmagny.
          Genevieve Destroismaisons was a sister to Jacques Destroismaisons (1688-1756) who is in my line.
          In my family tree, I have Robert Vaillancourt (1644-1699) from Normandie who had married Marie-Francoise Gobeil (1655-?) in 1688. They had Marie Vaillancourt (1674-1706) who had married Jean-Baptiste Michaud (1674-?) in 1697. Marie Vaillancourt was a sister to Robert Vaillancourt who had married Genevieve Destroismaisons.
          So, looks like you and I are distant cousins.
          As a note, Andre Destroismaisons (1802-?) married Marguerite Essiambre (1811-?) on 10 July 1832 in St.-Ambroise-de-la-Jeune-Lorette. Her mother Marie Trudel is in the Huron Registry in Loretteville.

            I think that if my Husband took a aDNA test. He and I would be very distant cousins 😂 .
            So my husband is from Robert and Genevieve’s son Joseph Vaillancourt who married Marie Teresa Martin

            I’m not on Ancestry. Started there with a saliva test.
            Talking about related. There’s same family in my family tree on both my parents side. In other words, a brother married into my father’s side and his sister married into my mother’s side. That’s cool. Then there’s great great grandchildren with a different family name that married into the original line without knowing it. For instance, a great great granddaughter married into the same family as her great great grandmother. That was interesting to find. It was a tiny population at the beginning of colonization.

  52. I’m looking information on my Grandmother. My mother didn’t know much about her because she died of tuberculosis when my mother was 9 around 1938. My mother stated she was a French Canadian Indian and was born and raised in Nova Scotia on an Indian reservation. I have always wanted to know my heritage. On my mother’s Birth Certificate her mother’s name was A Mary Blanchard. We have no idea what A stood for or it was her Indian name. She married and moved off the reservation. She moved to Boston Massachusetts. She had a total of 4 kids. She had a son who momma only remembers his was Joe Casey. She had 3 daughters oldest Genevieve not sure what her last given name was, Helen Boyd and my mother Eleanor Marie Boyd. We know she was married at least twice. If anyone has any information on A Mary Blanchard please send me an email. I know I have Indian blood in me be cause of some of my features and I turn dark in the sun. My mother looked like her father fair skinned blonde hair as child with blue eyes. Her hair turned very dark around 8 years old.

  54. I have been trying to find more information on my Grandmothers family. She was born a Ducharme in Quebec 1904. Her father Samuel Ducharme was born St.Valentin Quebec 1866. His father what I can gather is Moise Ducharme born Selkirk Manitoba 1837. He married Marie Boudreau born 1843 in Quebec. Any help with this line would be greatly appreciated.

  55. I am looking for help to find family of Joseph T Gobeil son on Jean Baptiste Gobeil. Joseph was my Great grandfather and family buried in Jaffrey NH but trying to find tribal ties within our lineage and compile family history for my children. My grandmother is still alive but dementia has started to come along so we live with her and get pieces of her childhood memories and family stories.

    I have heard about Rochester NH and family in Maine, but also have strong ties on the VT and western NH side but could be from my great grandmother Helene. I didn’t grow up knowing much or spending time with that side of my family or the history. Not sure if anyone took on family historian anywhere in the family tree, but I am looking to take the on or create role for my generation and pass it on.
