Abitibi-Temiscamingue is in the far western section of Quebec and borders the province of Ontario. The original inhabitants of the area were the Algonquin. They were followed by the French explorer Radisson (1670) and then individuals connected with the fur trade (Hudson’s Bay Company). Large scale European settlement began only at the end of the 1800s and early twentieth century – and in particular during the years of the Great Depression.
