      • I also started a tree on Genanet but I don’t have the time to fill it in. That is also another project of mine. Now that I have proof of DNA and some of the matches. But what gets me – I have all these French Canadian names attached to my DNA but the DNA shows me as Native, followed by Norweigan, Sweed, 16% Russian Jew – which I don’t know where that comes from. Followed by Asian than Middle Eastern.I know my Native blood which is St Croix Ojibwe and Red Lake. I also know about the Sweed. I am thinking that the other blood has to come from the French Fur Traders – I will really have to investigate who in our lines carries this DNA marker. Get the test done and lets figure this out. On the Ancestry.com DNA site I have 284 pages of DNA matches.

      • Romeo, a Y-DNA test of my nephew has confirmed we are descendants of Pierre Hudon dit Beaulieu, however we don’t know our path to him as we have hit a brick wall in the late 1700’s. We descend from Jean Beaulieu dit Sinclair (b. 1820) and Marie Gariepy (b. 1825). Have you also done a Y-DNA test? It may help us with our connection. Has anyone done tests through ancestry.ca? Perhaps we are matches through there.

        • Good morning all.

I have received my DNA analysis and my paternal (Beaulieu/Ilsley) haplogroup is R-DF98 (whatever that means). It also shows only 6.6% French DNA. I have listed my lineage as far back as I can trace, at the bottom of this thread. Hopefully, there are relatives out there who can fill in the gaps. Again, I can only trace as far back as my great-great grandfather Paul Hudson Beaulieu, born 1823 Quebec, Canada.

Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

          • Hi John, did you do a Y-DNA test through familytreedna.com? This is the most extensive Y-DNA test and will show you other men who are matches with you along your surname (Beaulieu) line. I do not see you as a match to my nephew on the site, so perhaps we are not from the same line. Let me know where you were tested and we can perhaps draw some conclusions, or theories 🙂

          • John, I just sent my 23andme kit in a week ago, we will see if we are matches. If you really want to track your Beaulieu line it would be best to get a specific YDNA test through familytreedna, that will help you find your closest Beaulieu matches and really help in your research. 23andme does not do YDNA matching, they only tell you your Haplogroup.

          • Good morning

My sister received the 23 and me kit as a gift, and registered it before letting me submit the sample because I’m more interested in this than she is. Consequently, although the results are male, it is registered under her name (Anne Beaulieu Atwood). The 23 and me researchers must have had a field day with that! So, when you get your results back, and check the 23 and me DNA matches, you’ll see her listed instead of me. I recognized the last names of about 3 out of over 1200 matches. The other day, through familysearch.org, I was able to trace one of my lines back to a Hebrew King in 500 something BC Jerusalem. It was pretty amazing. However, my Beaulieu line, as well as my Anderson (my middle name) line have both stalled after just a few generations. Through information I found on “rootsweb” I was able to plug a few holes, but nothing major. I’ll have to keep digging.

Because the timeline is off for my great great grandpa to be your grandpa. Can you let me know if it is the same Theophile or it is both father and son with this name. I never thought we had native ancestry! We live in BC now but my father is from Trois Pistoles QC my grandfather was Arthur Beaulieu and great grandpa Joseph Beaulieu. Looks like we are distant cousins !

Besides trying to figure this family tree out is a job in itself. I only had 2 Beaulieu’s hit on my DNA – I’m thinking not a lot have done the test yet. My book is now 230 pages and some of the names did hit my DNA. Most are women but I don’t know if the last name is their married or birth name. Here’s a list: Merrill, Tardiff, Ouellette, Wheelock, Hubert, Doran, Fairbank, Boucher, LaFromboise, Perreault, Houghton, Paradis, McKenzie, Dionne, Paquette, Whipple, Selkirk, MacGillivray, McGillis, Warren, Morrison, Michaud, LaFriniere, Saulteaux, Metcalf, Gamache, LaPointe, Sayer, Desjarlais, Cameron and a lot more but I think the other names not listed here are from my Grandma who married my Beaulieu grandfather.

My mother’s sisters want to know where the Indian blood is closer to their generation. We come through Pierre; Francois; Francois II; Mathurin; Simon 1776; Simon II 1807; Simon III (Molo) 1834; to their Grandfather Pea Prime Beaulieu. Please help. These ladies are in their 90′s and want to know soon. Their mother kept telling them they had Native American blood but would not talk more about it. The fact of the Native American connection almost stopped Meme’s wedding to my grandfather Wilfred Rossignol. His parents did not want him to marry her. Any advice or leads would be appreciated.

      • Where the Native blood comes from is Pierre and Marie’s grandson Bazile Hudon Dit Beaulieu along with his brother Paul Orde Hudon dit Beaulieu (they come from the lines of Lieutenant Nicolas Hudon) went to Wisconsin in 1804 where Bazile married Ogiimaageezhigoikwe whose dad is Chief Waubishgaugauge and his parents are Chief Keeshkemin and Okunzhew and his dad is Shedawish and his dad is Chief kechenezuhyauh and Paul married Wauneauseikwe – where her nephew was the Hereditary Head Chief of the Mississippi Band of Ojibwes now residing in White Earth, Minnesota. I have been working in this for 6 years. I come from the line of Bazile through his son Paul Hudon Beaulieu who lived in White Earth, Minnesota. His son Clement Abraham “Ka’Wans” Hudon Beaulieu had 22 children in Red Lake, MN where I am enrolled at. I do have more info so if your older relatives would like more information – please let me know.

We have alot of history here since our great great great grandfather moved here, started a family and had a farm, still puting the puzzle back together, but its pretty cool to have this info out there to acquire. It will continue as i am very determined to bring back the legacy that once lived in lisbon maine. Godbless our family and hope we are all on the same page! Lol alot of info to digest, but its pretty neat being in the same family home since late 1800s.

          • With regards to your grandparents – what did they do for a living? Depending on what did – someone could have kept diaries such as the fur traders did and you can find mentions in there. That is where I found a wealth of information. You can’t trust the census since with my family they were listed as either black or mulatto and there is no black blood in our family. One thing you can look for is on the census if they are listed as citizen or non citizens. Natives were not considered citizens until 1924 so if there is Natives in your grandparents lines that may be a hint. Did you check the Metis files in Canada? I seen that my grandfather had a couple of his kids on the list but not all of them. I don’t know why. Trying to get any info out of the Bureau of Indian Affairs is useless – they don’t release information – it would take an act of Congress to get records open. If I think about any more ways that you may be able to find out – I’ll let you know. Here’s another way – check military records. There has to be forts in that area see if there is any mention in any of their records especially when the Govt was trying to get Natives onto Reservations and wars would start – they may have records on who was in the Forts.

I have been doing this for 9 years now and have followed quite a few lines. I just realized on the Pierre and Marie Hudon dit Beaulieu line that we are related to Celine Dion. Madonna’s 6th great grandmother was married to one of our great uncles but no children were produced. I am now following the lines of Queen Elizabeth – she may also be in our lines.

Here in MN you can get your personal birth certificate and your children’s birth certificate but with anyone living – it’s almost impossible but with someone deceased all you have to do it prove you are related and what your intentions are for the birth certificate. I think for genealogy purposes they are not certified. To join an organization through lineage I can’t remember if it has to be a certified birth certificate but with tribal enrollment your copies have to be certified. Julie

        • Florence lived in White Earth. In Red Lake – you have to have someone enrolled there. It seems your side is more in the White Earth area. Red Lake has a checklist that is needed in order to be considered – you would have to be at least 1/4 Red Lake which means your parent would have to be 1/2. Red Lake does not accept DNA tests that states ethnicity – they go direct blood lines. I know White Earth was talking about changing their enrollment so maybe you can contact their enrollment department and see what is needed. If I was you – I would start collecting birth certificates from your relatives that you feel are enrolled either in Red Lake or White Earth. If your trying to use Queen of the Skies blood – she w as a Lake Superior Ojibwe and I don’ know what their enrollment process is like. I do have friends that I went to school with that are from there – I can ask them what the requirements are. Julie

I need to check to see if White Earth is allowing descendant based on lineage. You can get birth certificates for Minnesota residents through the MN Historical Society http://www.mnhs.org/people/birthrecords. Julie. PS – have you don’t your DNA yet with Ancestry.com or any of the others?

  10. My biological mother, who did not raise me, is Jeanette Marie Beaulieu (Quinn ,Smith), Her father is Joseph Beaulieu and her mother is Odelia Rose Hamlin. Both deceased.I have been doing a family tree, but am stuck on Joseph’s side. I believe Joseph’s father is Alexander “alex” Beaulieu, but I can not figure out who Alexander’s father is . I believe it is either Paul Hudon Beaulieu or Basile Hudon Beaulieu. I have my grandmother, Odelia’s side done. Can anyone help. I have read several article and have been on ancestry.com, but everything is conflicting. It is also confusing as which brother actually married Margaret Racine/Wau waus e quay. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • Hi Jamie – I have been working on this tree for 9 years and yes there is A LOT of conflicting information. People will post without investigating first and than others follow thinking it’s correct. Than when people mess with my tree – I get pissed and quit posting for a while. I also make mistakes and try to correct it but then end up making a bigger mess. I still need to figure out how Ancestry.com works when you post info and accept their info.

1st of all – I wish who ever put Margaret Racine done for anyone in the Hudon dit Beaulieu tree would remove it. They put my Grandmother as Margaret Racine and her name is Queen of the Skies. I spent hours researching church records trying to find where Queen was baptized and what her baptisms name chosen but could find one. Now with your Grandma Wauneauseikwe who was born in Wisconsin. She is the daughter of Waiskekewenzie and Wahkoqwon – the Head. Her nephew – Mayzhuckegeshig (Lowering Sky) is the hereditary head chief of the Mississippi Band- White Earth. He was the oldest son of Chief Quewezance of the Mississippi Band, who was killed in the battle1804-1809 near Stillwater, MN. Wauneauseikwe married Paul Orde Hudon dit Beaulieu who is the brother to Bazile Hudon dit Beaulieu. The brothers went to Fort Kaministriquia (near Thunder Bay) in 1804 and than eventually made their way to Wisconsin. Julie

    • Carol, Here is what I have – I also had a photo of Alex and Lena but I lost the power cord to the lap top it’s on. But here is what I have. I felt bad for Odelia and Joseph – they lost 2 children right after birth – one in 1919 and the other in 1920. Joseph was born 1873 son of Alexander Hudon Beaulieu and Helena Lena Kappell. Alexander is the son of Basile Hudon Beaulieu and Mary Soulliard. Basile is the son of Paul Orde Hudon dit Beaulieu and Wauneauseikwe. Paul Orde came to Fort Kamanaitiquoya (Thunder Bay) in 1804 with his brother Bazile Hudon dit Beaulieu and made their way to Wisconsin. You can see some of the tree on my Dad’s tree on Ancestry.com – Robert Duane Beaulieu Sr. I don’t have all info on their since someone people mess with my tree and I get pissed and don’t enter info for a while. I need to go and dig around Sault Ste Marie and dig for more information. I don’t think I will ever make it to Quebec since I can’t learn French. It’s some tid bits that I found. Did you know that Celine Dion shares two sets of Hudon dit Beaulieu grandparents? Madonna and Carmilla Parker Bowles also share one set of Hudon dit Beaulieu. I wonder if we can ask the Queen – our cousin in law- if we can come for tea?

      • I don’t know if you saw my post on the blog, i am not sure if I send things correctly.. I copied it and sending it this way My first attempt at a reply did not go through–Second attempt. Julie I want to thank you for your help. I started a family tree 9 years ago when I retired, but had to stop to devote my time to my husband who got cancer. He had an experimental treatment and is now free from cancer. I am now back to the family trees. I am enrolled in the MCT at Fond du Lac because of my father’s Fond du Lac blood and my biological mother’s White Earth blood. I also have St. Croix and Lac Courte Oreilles from my father’s mother’s side. I still have a couple of questions for you.
        1. What is the tribal affiliation is Wauneauseikwe?
        2. I had Wauneauseikwe’s father as Moh ko gwon and her mother as Bemoashdum; Moh ko gwon’s father as Bi Aus Wa, then Bi aus wa’s father as matchiwaijan, his father as wa ja wa das kos. Is that something you have in your records? If not I will keep searching
        3. I read some article that said be careful when looking at Bi Aus Wah because there are two of them. Can you give any clarity?
        4. Where did you get the information about Joseph and Odelia having lost two children early in their marriage?
        5. /can you recommend a good book about the White Earth people?

I would also be interested in the Beaulieu pictures that are relevant.

This message is for Julie, Nativequeen1 and any other person I may have offended by stating Margaret Racine was Queen of the Skies. I wrote that in ignorance. I am always interested in the true facts about our people. Thank you both for your help and comments. CAROL

      • Thank you for all the post regarding Canadian Families, Very interesting. I was also looking at Ransom Judd Powell Papers and the genealogy of the Beaulieu and Fairbanks families. Are those documents a reliable sources?

My grandparents were Joseph and O’delia (Hamlin) Beaulieu and I learned from yours and Julie’s posts that I am from the line of Paul Hudon Dit Beauleu and Wauneausikwe. Paul being the brother of Bazile Beaulieu, whose wife was Queen of the Skies.

From the Ransom Judd Powell papers it looks like I am also from the line of Bazile Beaulieu as well through O’delia Hamlin’s side. Is this correct? Here is what I gathered:

O’delia’s father is Nelson (Nels) Hamlin. Nel’s mother is Maggie Monroe, whose parents were Hank Monroe and Sophia Fairbanks. Sophia’s parents were Clement Fairbanks and Shub we yea (aka Mary). Clement Fairbank’s parents were Robert Fairbanks and Catherine Beaulieu whose parents were Bazile Beaulieu and Queen of the Skies. Possible???

One Last point of confusion. Paul Hudon Beaulieu’s wife’s name. You indicated that it was Wauneausikwe, I have not seen that in print on any documents or on Ancestry, etc. The Ransom papers indicate that he married Ah was e quay (aka wah waus e quay). Where is the documentation of the name Wauneausikwe?

Thank you for all the help. All these posting on this blog have been so valuable and looking forward to reading them has been an exciting part of my day CAROL.

        • Hey Carol
I got the information from her nephew Lowering Sky’s obit. I can look for it but it will take time. I work everyday until Sunday – I hate holiday’s!!! It is easier to use Orde with your Paul Hudon since my grandfather – who is the nephew to your Paul. My Paul is just Paul Hudon Beaulieu. I had to read it a couple times to make sure I had the right person. The most difficult thing about genealogy is that everyone names each other the same name. I found the obit at Bemidji State University a few years ago.

    • We all come from Jean Hudon and Francoise Durand and than their son Pierre Hudon dit Beaulieu and Marie Genevieve Gobeil than from their son Lieutenant Nicolas Hudon dit Beaulieu and Madeliine Bouhard and this is where we split. My Grandfather is their son Nicolas and your grandfather is Joseph Hudon dit Beaulieu and Madeleine Langlais. Their son Julien Barthelemi Hudon dit Beaulieu and Catherine Moyen than their son Joseph Hudon dit Beaulieu and Angelique Gagnon and their son Narcisse Hudon dit Beaulieu and Louise Lavoie and than their son Jean Baptiste Hudon dit Beaulieu and Justine Letelier and your Grandma Anne Marie. Here is how you are related to Carmilla Parker Bowles:

CHILD: Joseph Hudon Beaulieu born 5/1/1716 and died 2/6/1776 in Riviere Ouelle, Kamouraska, Quebec. Married 1st wife 4/3/1742, Riviere Ouelle, Quebec – Marie Madeline Langlois Seriem born 3/29/1723 Riviere Ouelle and died 7/16/1766. Daughter of Louis Philippe Sargent dit Langlais and Margerite LaVoie. Married 2nd wife 6/5/1769 Riviere Ouelle – Angelique D’Anjou born 6/22/1747 and died 4/10/1825 Riviere Ouelle. Angelique’s mother is Angelique Grondin and granddaughter of Francois Grondin (mom’s dad). Angelique’s 2nd husband married 2/15/1779 Riviere Ouelle – Joseph Michel Gagnon born 9/30/1754 and died 6/5/1815 Riviere Ouelle. Parents: Joseph Gagnon born 3/2/1728 and died 4/19/1810 and Madeleine Hudon dit Beaulieu born 7/29/1731 and died 11/8/1807. She is the daughter of Louis Charles Hudon dit Beaulieu who is the brother to Lieutenant Nicolas Hudon dit Beaulieu. Joseph and Angelique’s descendants are related to Camilla Parker Bowles through their mother’s side.

I don’t have any info on your Grandma Anne Marie but I will dig and see what I can find.

        • I have not found any Natives on Joseph’s branch – but I did only go out 1 to 2 generations. The mixing of the French and Native was mainly during the Fur Trading era – around 1800 until the fur trade slowed down. There are 3 branches of Hudon dit Beaulieus who married Natives. One branch seems to be impossible to solve. Francois who went to NWT along with 2 brothers. Once he married – there are records of his children and future generations. Author’s put that this is where we came from but we are from Bazile who went to the Thunder Bay area in 1805 – 2 brothers followed – one – Paul married Native the the other brother Roman went back to Montreal. BUT – I did find where your Joseph once he married 2nd wife – their descendants are related to Carmilla Parker Bowles. We would only in Theory be related to Carmilla since Lieutenant Nicolas is our Grandfather. Let me know if I can help in any other area. Julie

          • OMG – I have tried everyday for 3 months to try to narrow it down. There are quite a few individuals who have tried tracing this and they can’t figure it out. There was a comment the other day on here from someone who stated that he found a death notice? for Francois and I have been trying to see which Francois this is. The one who posted also stated that he left NWT because he broke his back. I was really thinking that it could have been Francois Hudon dit Beaulieu and 2nd wife Marie Angelique Emond kids. Marie’s 1st husband is a Dufault which their 1st born is Jean Baptiste Dufault born 1712 but I found records that showed he would go by the last name Beaulieu maybe since his brothers are Beaulieus. With the 3 brothers who were in NWT – the oldest was Jean Baptiste. Marie’s son Francois was born in 1723 which NWT Francois was born 1722 and than there was a Joseph which Marie’s younger son was Joseph Beaulieu. Jean Francois Dufault’s daughter Marie Anne Dufault born 1769 married Francois Bouvier born 1751 son of Marie Madeleine Hudon dit Beaulieu who married Louis Bouvier so there are many chances of DNA hits. The Francois I from NWT lived at Pot au Beur, Sorel, Quebec. Jean Francois Dufault married in 1739 in Sorel his 1st wife Charlotte Pilote. Since they were brothers – maybe Francois also lived there for a time.

I would love to see Francois II’s Journal. I don’t know if anyone knows what happened to it or if the Priest who had it gave it to the Church – there could be information in there than can answer these questions.

I have 9+ DNA hits in the NWT – which shocked me but I know some are from my Beaulieu side but also my Great Great Grandfather is Roderick McKenzie from the Ile a la Crosse, English District, Saskatchewan. It’s too bad that with DNA that it can’t tell the different between Tribes and that way my Native book can determine which blood is from the NWT.

I could really be off the mark but I’m still searching. Maybe if we keep working together – maybe we can get closer.

      • Hello Julie and all interested others, My name is Joelle Normandin. I live in Glens Falls NY. I can trace my Hudon dit Beaulieu ancestry to my great great great great grandmother Elisabeth Isabelle Hudon dit Beaulieu. born July 6 1809 in Maskinonge Quebec to a Basile Hudon dit Beaulieu and Marie Anne Dupuis. That is where I am stuck. I do know that Elisabeth Isabelle married a Denis Monbleau dit LaTulippe in 1828 Napierville, QC. They had many children including my great great great grandmother Marie Louise Monbleau in 1839. Denis Monbleau dies in 1846 leaving Elisabeth Isabelle with 6 young children and in 1850 Elisabeth Monbleau turns up on the US Census with 6 children living in Glens Falls NY. My grandfather , George Normandin, Marie Louise(his great grandmother) He told me that she was part Native and from Quebec. I have family pictures of her son Andre and this man is most definately Native. I am trying to figure all of this out. Any help that you can provide is very much appreciated. • Good morning all.
I’ve been looking for information on my paternal great-great grandfather Paul Hudson Beaulieu, born 1823 in Quebec,Canada. He moved to Portland, Maine and may have Americanized his middle name from Hudon dit, but I have no idea. That’s as far back as I can go on my Beaulieu side. I’ve received help from some of you good people, but nothing really concrete.
I don’t know if Quebec is the province, or the city. Hopefully someone out there has a record.

        • Hey Joelle – I will try this again. I also am the grandaughter of Nicolas Hudon 1723-1801 and 3rd wife Marie Josephte Miville dit Deschene 1760-1811. Their son Bazile Hudon 1785-1838 and Ogiimaageezhigoqua are my grandparents. With Nicolas – he had Bazile and another son Nicolas Basile Hudon 1759 who maried Marie Josette Miville dit Deschenes 1760 who would be my Great Uncle and Great Antie but I don’t have a Basile who married Marie Anne Dupuis- I will have to work another generation. As for Maskinonge, Quebec. It seems that during the fur trade – Maskinonge Parish was a hub for fur traders. Bazile and his two brothers Paul Orde and Henri moved to Maskinonge and moved in with Cousin Antoine Hudon 1720 and his wife Francoise LaVoie/de la Voye before they left for Thunder Bay and WI in 1804. Henri was the only one to return and married and settled in Maskinonge. Antoine and Francoise had a son Alexis Huson 1746-1804 also lived in Maskinonge – Yamachiche. The NWT Beaulieu have ties to Yammachiche but no one seems to know which branch. Let me do some digging into Basile and Marie Anne and see if I can find anything. Julie

  13. My first attempt at a reply did not go through–Second attempt.

The “Wauneausikwe” is coming from comments by a reader which were published as a thread in a post – not my research. I suggest you leave the comment under that post and those people will answer!

The article mentions how Paul and Alexander Beaulieu; Paul Orde Beaulieu, his son, Bazil H: as well as Paul’s brother, Roman H., fit into the history of that town. Interesting reading. CAROL

I’m going to send you some stuff but not until next week. I’m cleaning my stuff up a little bit. Did you know that early Beaulieu’s should be enrolled in Wis? The Gov’t allowed individuals to choose where they wanted to go with approval of the Chief of the Band at that time. It started roughly in the 1830’s up until about 1900. Now you can’t do that. They are very strict now. Did you know that the Cadottes have a Huron Grandmother? I will send you info on people that I have that you have listed.I wish there was a better diagram for a family tree than what Ancestry has. Julie

      • I’m sending another. I forgot some sheets which the info you receive today may not make sense. I needed to fix the 1854 1/2 breed script with names associated with you and I also found a graveyard rooster that may also help. I got it a couple years ago and I need to go back to Becker County Historical Society and grab more since I found more names. I was only interested in Beaulieu and Fairbanks but it bloomed from there. They even have Bazile Hudon dit Beaulieu’s cash box that was used since 1804 and they let me handle it .
It was pretty cool. With the graveyard list there just isn’t a lot of info on Monroes. I grew up with some but they lived in Minneapolis. They are close with Hanks – which you may see that name on the graveyard sheets. When I went to Pembina I never seen a cemetery so I don’t know where the Hamlins from that area are buried. That may be a good adventure to track down. They did have one grave for an unknown – so the body would have to be exhumed to do a DNA match to see who is in there. I will pop it in the mail this afternoon. Julie

Mrs. Elizabeth Hurst, Pioneer of Kaukauna, Passes Away – Rites Today At St. Mary’s For Pioneer Early History of Deceased Woman Is Written by Mayor L. F. Nelson

Mrs. Elizabeth Hurst, aged 87 years, died at her home on Cleveland Avenue at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon after a two week illness.

Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Fred Reichel, Kaukauna, six sons, John, Nic, Fred, Joseph and George of Kaukauna, Bernard of Little Chute and Henry of Seattle, Washington. Thirty-three grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren also survive.

      Funeral This Morning
The body is at Greenwood Funeral Home, Hendricks Avenue, where rites will be held at 8:30 this morning. Services will be held at 9 o’clock at St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. A. Roder, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

The following concerning the passing of Mrs. Hurst was written by Mayor L. F. Nelson, president of the Outagamie County Pioneer and Historical society:

In the death of Mrs. John Hurst, Kaukauna has lost one of its great historical characters of unusual interest, as the Beaulieu family, of which Mrs. Hurst belongs, shares honors with the Lawes and the Grignons, other early settlers in Kaukauna.
Mrs. Hurst, nee Elizabeth Beaulieu, was born in Kaukauna, December 13, 1855 and was the daughter of Nicholas Beaulieu. Mrs Hurst’s mother, Margaret (Davids) Beaulieu was also born in Kaukauna, in a log house around the bend on the edge of the river below the present ball grounds on March 7, 1826.

      Grandfathers Met in War
Mrs. Hurst’s great grandfather, Jacob Davids, fought in the Revolutionary war. Her grandfather and great grandfather fought on opposite sides in the War of 1812, one of them with the Americans and the other with the British. They met on the battlefield. The great grandfather had made a trip to Canada at that time and was forced into the British army.

      Part Stockbridge Indian
Mrs. Hurst is part Stockbridge Indian, one of the tribes that belonged to the six great nations of New York state and for years lived in expectation of receiving a large grant of money from the government in payment for lands taken away from the Stockbridge Indians in New York state by the government.

Paul H. Beaulieu, her uncle, was the first citizen of Kaukauna to die in the Civil war. The Kaukauna G.A.R. post was named in his memory.

The home in which Mrs. Hurst lived on Beaulieu Hill was built in 1877 with lumber taken from the old saw mill when it was torn down. This sawmill stood at the bend below the ball park and was operated in 1835 by Captain Boyd and her uncle, Bazil Beaulieu.

      Wed in 1874
Mrs. Hurst was married to John Hurst in 1874. The marriage ceremony was performed by Rev. Hackle at Holy Angels church at Darboy, at the time when the south side of the river was a wilderness.

She received her early schooling in a country school located opposite the Brill farm, south of the city. They celebrated their golden wedding in 1924.

      Recalled Early Days
She recalled the time, when as a child, the Beaulieu family was forced to cross the river, before there was a bridge, on stepping stones or in a rowboat. At this time there were hardly any other settlers on the south side of the river, except Indians. One of these Stockbridge Indians, Chief Konkopot, lived on the high bluff on the north end of Dickson street, where the old Joseph Volas residence now stands.

Mrs. Hurst was proud of her Stockbridge Indian blood. Twelve children were born to the Hursts, eight are still living.

        • Carol, When the Government wanted the Copper from Madeline Island they moved the ancestor’s from that spot and they were placed at Saulte Ste Marie, Red Cliff, Bad River, Lac du Flambeau, Fond du Lac, Lac Courte Oreilles, Red Lake and the infamous death walk to Sandy Lake, MN where hundreds starved and froze to death. The Cadottes are also enmeshed with the Nolins and Sayers and a few lived in Saulte Ste Marie. If I’m not mistaken – John Johnston father in law to Henry Schoolcraft – was married into our family – his son – Lewis had two kids (the two children went by the last name Cadotte) with a married Cadotte. I think Lewis was also married at the time to Julie Sayers whose son by her previous marriage to Chief White Crane who is our great uncle and was killed when his son was 8 and he became Chief. His name is Chief Nebenagoching AKA Joseph Sayer. Joseph stated that his grandfather was Jean Baptiste Perrault and not John Sayers but with my DNA I have both names so I still can’t tell who our Grandfather is. Julie is also a sister to my Grandma Mary who married John H Fairbanks and is responsible for all the Fairbanks in Northern Minnesota – Red Lake, White Earth and Cass Lake. So here is more branches to explore on the Tree!!!! If you want any more info – just let me know. I have been busy trying to see if we are also related to the de Hoghtons from Lancashier, England. The White part of my DNA comes from Lancashier but I need to find the DNA link from John Houghton from Eaton Bray England to the de Hoghtons at Hoghton Tower. For the last 3 months – I have been going through a lot of info trying to see. I did get one DNA hit from a woman in the area and sent an email but never heard back. So with Fairbanks blood from Red Lake, White Earth and Cass Lake – this is also their DNA ancestor. Also along these lines is the Southworths who had the Salmesbury Hall in Preston Lancashier England. I know you will check this out – look for the White Lady Samlesbury, Saint John Hoghton and Saint Christopher Southworth. Through the Fairbanks line we could also possibly have Our Lady of Walsingham. Happy Reading and Researching!!!! Julie

You may be a couple of generations off. My grandfather (Stephen A. Beaulieu, Sr.) only had 2 children, my father(SAB, Jr.) and my aunt, so we could not share him.
Since I have no records of siblings for James Hudson Beaulieu, or Paul Hudson Beaulieu, you may come in from either of them. Again, I have no information beyond my great great grandfather, Paul. If you, or anyone else out there in Hudon dit Beaulieu, or Hudson Beaulieu land has any information that can help me fill in the blanks and move beyond Paul Hudson Beaulieu, I will be grateful.

During my research i did come across the name Francois Beaulieu Hudon more than once. would be nice to find out which line connects us. My line is based on marriage certificates and birth certificate as my neice did the DNA and it showed that she had no relations to me but her mother is my first cousin . My research has brought me to 3 generations prior to Pierre Hudon and Marie Gobeil.

      • Hey Blood Indian – I am 7th Generation from Pierre and Marie. Their son – Lieutenant Nicolas Hudon dit Beaulieu is my Grandfather. I have been having a hard time trying to figure out the Family Lines of Francois Beaulieu I 1722-1795 who married Ethiba. I do have a cousin thru DNA – we never met but communicate thru Ancestry.com. She is from the Yukon . I do have 9 DNA hits in the NWT. I did trace one line but Francois was not on it – he could be if we can tell which line of the Hudon dit Beaulieu’s he comes from. A lot of Native authors in Minnesota and Wisconsin have Francois Beaulieu I as our Grandfather but at best he is a Great Uncle. Our Grandfather is Bazile who married Queen of Skies in Wisconsin. Their grandson – Clement Abraham “KaWans” Hudon Beaulieu had over 22 children from Cass Lake, White Earth and Red Lake – where I’m enrolled. Someday I may pick up trying to see where Francois I fits into our tree.

    • Hey Carole,
I have been trying to figure how Francois I fits into our tree but can’t figure it out. Have you traced him?

  26. I am a descendant of Francois Beaulieu that went to the NWT. Family story says he went back east in 1795. Some say the reason for leaving NWT was to get treatment for a broken back. I have never seen any documentation or correspondence regarding an injury but do believe he did leave. He may or may not have went directly back to Quebec. I found a death record in the Drouin Collection from January 13 1823 for a Francois Hudon Beaulieu , Traveller of the Northwest, who died at the age of 63. Probably not the same one as the NWT Francois should be much older.

    • Derek, the Francois Beaulieu that you are referring to, is that Old Man Beaulieu’s (Francois Beaulieu II) father? I have been trying to connect Francois Beaulieu to the Hudon dit Beaulieu family, but have not been able to determine who his father was. I would be interested in working with you to research his origins.

Are you a Beaulieu? If you are, we could do a Y-DNA test to trace the Beaulieu surname. I have done one for my nephew who is also a Beaulieu, although we are uncertain if we descend from Francois or not (family legend says yes).

Old Man Beaulieu was born in 1771 (if we can trust Wikipedia), which if your Francois Hudon Beaulieu who died in 1823 age 63, was born in 1760 then he would have been about 11 years old when his son was born. So like you say the numbers are not adding up.

      • I’m not a Beaulieu by name but descend from 2 of Old Man Beaulieu’s son’s, Francois 3rd and Alexis. I haven’t gotten my DNA done but one of my sisters has. Maybe one of my brothers also but I’ll ask them. And I certainly agree the dates don’t add up.

        • I would really appreciate if we could determine if we come up as cousins through DNA, I have tested on Ancestry.com, along with a bunch of my relatives. We would just have to check to see if any of us match with your sister. I understand that the admin on this site can share our email address, would you be okay if she shared mine with you? Hopefully she is reading these posts 🙂

  27. The Beaulieu’s are on my mother’s side. My mom’s dad is the Great Grandson of Alexis and my mom’s mom is the Great Granddaughter of Francois 3rd. I know lots of male Beaulieu’s in the NWT that descend from Old Man Beaulieu. Whether they got their DNA done or not I don’t know as I don’t live up there anymore. I might be able to find out if need be.

    • I would love to connect with someone who may be willing to do a Y DNA test. I am so curious if we are related through Francois, that I would pay some of the cost of the test if I could find someone 🙂

    • Hey Derek – I mentioned in my post tonight to C Beaulieu with info you had on Francois. I was trying to see if your information was in my tree but with today being my only day off – I was just getting into looking into it and than I seen the post from C. Beaulieu. I found something that I thought was kinda funny – a Jean Baptiste Hudon dit Beaulieu was imprisoned for petty larency in Quebec 11/1/1810. There was another Jean Baptiste Hudon dit Beaulieu had a letter left in a Quebec post office 10/16/1783 but I don’t know how to get the official records to see who these guys are. I would really like to see the letter in the post office. I also found records of Francois Hudon Beaulieu 1723 whose possessions were being divided up after he died but I can’t read French and the handwriting is so bad that I don’t think I could try to get a French dictionary.

I’m just another Beaulieu trying to figure out which branch of Pierre and Marie’s went to the NWT besides their Granddaughter who married a Bouvier.

  28. Hello, I am looking to find Indigenous heritage along my family line. I have found some little hints in my paternal grandmother’s side but nothing definitive. Angele Hudon dit Beaulieu was my 3rd great-grandmother. Francois Hudon dit Beaulieu and Angele Dumais were her parents. She married Francois Berube. I’ve been able to trace back to Pierre but haven’t found much in way of Indigenous information. I’m still new to genealogy so I’m not sure what or where to start. I have done an ancestry dna test and my ThruLines hit as far back as Joseph Hudon dit Beaulieu.
