This series of Early French Canadian Pioneers microposts is dedicated to the earliest settlers of Quebec. If you are new to the genealogy of French-speaking Canadians, please be aware that the earliest French settlers can also descend from the Acadian pioneers who originally settled in what are now Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. In addition, please note that any Native related links refer back to other posts citing census, marriage or other documents with indigenous or Metis individuals of that surname, however those individuals do not necessarily descend from these particular French Canadian settlers. All these posts are intended as Finding Aides – a place to find possible clues and start your own research!

Filles du Roi is the name that’s been given to about 700/800 women who emigrated from France to Quebec in the middle of the 17th century. They were called the King’s Daughters because Louis XIV (King of France) had sponsored their trips to the New World. Each Fille received her passage, a hope chest and room and board until her marriage (read further at The Canadian Encyclopedia).

Mathurine Thibault was a Fille du Roy. She was born about 1634 in Saumur, France to Etienne Thibault and Jeanne de Lamothe. She died in the Lachine Massacre on August 5th, 1689.

    • I am a great great granddaughter of Mary Jones and Louis Thibault through their daughter Caroline. I have a copy of their marriage record from 1855 in Gracefield PQ in the Gatineau Valley. I can’t find anything about the Jones origins though. On census records she consistently claimed Ontario birth from Quebec born parents.

        • Hello Evelyn. Yes I’m the eldest son of Claudette and Norman I also have hit a wall with the search of Louis Thibault and Mary Jones I have left several messages but they seem not to reach anyone. I have tried Mary Agnes Jones, Mary Jones and Mary Agnes Foubert It seems to go nowhere.

          Thank you Glen Forgie

    • If your parents are Norman and Claudette then I’ve traced your line back to Napoleon Thibault son of Louis Thibault and Mary Jones. Napoleon Thibault was my great grandmother Caroline Thibault Rousson’s brother. I’ve hit a wall at Mary Jones but have found documents that refer to her as Marie Foubert. Napoleon was an informant at the death/burial of his mother and the name Agnes shows up.

  3. Hello Cynthia and Evelyn through DNA testing before Louis Thibault and Marie Jones, there was Joseph Francois Thibault and Euphemie Banville. Euphemie was born in Oct 8 1808, and Joseph in 1800. They had more than 10 children, from there we have to search.
