This series of Index: Early French Canadian Pioneers microposts is dedicated to the earliest settlers of Quebec. If you are new to the genealogy of French-speaking Canadians, please be aware that the earliest French settlers can also descend from the Acadian pioneers who originally settled in what are now Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. In addition, please note that any Native related links refer back to other posts citing census, marriage or other documents with indigenous or Metis individuals of that surname, however those individuals do not necessarily descend from these particular French Canadian settlers. All these posts are intended as Finding Aides – a place to find possible clues and start your own research!

      • Hi Kathleen; Toussaint was the son of Jean Giroux and Marguerite(Quilleron). Jean was born in 1958. No mention has been found on his parents that I or anyone else has found that I know of. Jean died 1/10/1641. I did find a record that he was part of a family that raised him after a disease wiped out most of the town and his family.He was living, as if adopted, with Jacques Asselin and Cecile (Olivier) until he married Marguerite Quilleron in 1621/1622, who was born in 1600 and died in 1671. Her father was Aubin Quilleron. No name has ever been found for her mother and is listed as Mrs. Aubin Quilleron.
        Other children of Jean and Marguerite were;

        Etienne Born 03/25/1623 Died 10/4/1641
        Nicolas ” 01/04/1625 ” 1650
        Catherine ” 12/19/1625 ” 12/19/1625
        Antoine ” 09/18/1627 ” 09/18/1627
        Thomas ” 03/08/1629 ” 1699
        Marguerite ” 03/06/1640 ” 1641

        I do have other info I can share on Toussaints’ life that was compiled as a 3 part story, but I would be only able to send it as a file in an e-mail. Also, if you didn’t know, Toussaint had 2 daughters that married into 2 different Indian lineages. It all depends on how much info you would like to know. If you would be interested in any more info, please e-mail me at Qcgag@yahoo.com, and let me know. Thank you!!

However all of this is hearsay, passed on from my grandfather down. I’ve never found anything factual or proof of this. 6. Hi everyone. I am curious about tracing my Giroux lineage back to Quebec. Currently I reside in Minnesota, and I don’t have any knowledge of how the Giroux family arrived here. I know we have been here, in Minnesota, for at least a few generations.

    I’ve also been told that the original Giroux, in Quebec, was involved in something to do with “textiles and weaving”, which seems in line with some of the things I’m reading here. Its highly possibly that someone in my family just read these same things I’m reading here, and assumed some connection to our Giroux lineage to this one given the name, but I’d love to be able to find more specifics.

    Does anyone have any information on the Giroux family origins in Minnesota, especially how they do or do not relate to the early Canadian Giroux family?

    I emailed those of you with your emails on this post directory as well, hoping I might catch you, as I’m not sure if this discussion is still active. Many thanks.

    • Hello Jason,
      The only way to link yourself back is to at least get to the generation that first moved to Minnesota. Do you have the husband and wife (and children if applicable) that emigrated to the States? If you do then it’s possible I could link you back to the Quebec family.
      Or have you searched for the burial certificates and-or death records of the emigrating family or their children? If they are Catholics their parents or siblings might be mentioned.

      • Hi Evelyn. I did a little research, and as far as I can tell, it was Alcibiades A.(lexander) Giroux, one Feb. 23, 1885, who first came to the United States from Canada. I believe his wife’s name was Mona. They had two children, at least, that I know of, Richard and Don.

        He was a physician and was from Granby, Quebec. His parents were Alexander and Melina (Masse) Giroux.

        After receiving his medical degree in 1908, he moved to Duluth, Minnesota to practice medicine.

        Some of this information was told to me by my father, but he did not know much about him aside from his name and that he was a physician. I found this article that provided the other details I mentioned here:
        https://books.google.com/books?

        id=_iiEOQSnk8wC&pg=PA818&lpg=PA818&dq=Dr.+A.+Giroux+West+Superior+Street,+Duluth+Minnesota&source=bl&ots=RTPLdqz_iz&sig=ZZlxyQXj3cmye5cwjGuCOvwrDeI&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjF4NSAxsTXAhUJ3SYKHVTlCk0Q6AEILTAD#v=onepage&q=Dr.%20A.%20Giroux%20West%20Superior%20Street%2C%20Duluth%20Minnesota&f=false

        So hopefully that gives us something to go on. I am really interested in learning more about how/if this relates back to the original Giroux clan of Quebec, any information to get me pointed in the right direction would be hugely appreciated.

        Many thanks.

  7. Actually, after a bit more research, I think Alcibiades’ spouse’s name was Kathryn A (Tetu) Giroux.

    My dad said it was “Mona”, but I think this must have been a nick name or term of endearment, as other records I’m finding seem to say it is Kathryn.

    • Jason, have you tried Ancestry.com? They have free 2 week trials. I was able to pull up Alcibiades and his wife Kathryn; and then his father. Without knowing if this line links to mine, I can’t add to my family tree right now, but through this feed found an error in one of my names, so will be adjusting it over the next few nights and if I find a connection to you I will let you know!

Was he married and if so was it in Canada? Were your grandfather’s brothers Oscar and Henry from Canada? Were they from Quebec, or possibly Ontario? If your grandfather or his brothers were born in Canada, do you have their wives’ names? Then I can give you direction 🙂
