Mayor Joseph Canadian and Two Members Re-elected
The annual election of Indian councillors and mayor for Caughnawaga resulted as follows:
Mayor – Joseph Canadian
Councillors – James Phillips, Louis Norton, Andrew DeLisle, Angus Montour, J. Lacombe
From the foregoing it will be seen that the Mayor has been re-elected. Councillors Phillips and Norton are also re-elected. The remainder of the list are the new members of the council, replacing Angus Albany and Peter Jacobs, resigned and Louis Beauvais, defeated.
The voters turned out in larger numbers than usual, evincing a deep interest in the internal ffairs of the community.
A letter just received from the federal Government reads as follows: “I beg to inform you that the election of Joseph Canadian as chief of the Caughnawaga Indian Reserve is hereby confirmed by the Department of Indian Affairs for the ensuring year.”
