The Chiassons | Pioneer Families of Shippegan

Index: Pioneer Families of Shippegan

This is a series of micro posts about the pioneers of Shippagan in Gloucester County, New Brunswick. Each post is organized around initial information from Msg. Donat Robichaud’s Le Grand Chipagan: Histoire de Shippagan, supplemented with genealogical data from F. Theriault’s Les Families de Caraquet and is now being gradually enriched with information from other sources. These are mostly French-language sources and some aren’t easily available, so if you need more information please leave your questions in a comment box below  🙂

Chiasson pioneers of Shippegan, Miscou and Lameque | New Brunswick Genealogy

This line of Chiassons became pioneers all around the area including Shippegan, Miscou, Lameque and Caraquet. The Shippegan founding couple were Nicolas Chiasson (son of Joseph Chiasson  and Anne Hache) and Genevieve Gionet Gionais (daughter of Francois Gionet and Marie LeVicaire who had arrived originally from Prince Edward Island and were married in Caraquet in 1784. The first mention of this couple in Shippegan is from 1809 when they occupied a piece of land in the centre of the village. There’s even a stream named after them called “Ruisseau a Nicolas” (Nicolas’ Stream).

These are the children of their son Nicolas Chiasson and Colette Duguay (daughter of Francois Duguay and Marie Doiron) who are the couple who gave rise to the Shippegan Chiassons:

  • Marie,
  • Christin,
  • Marie (m. Joseph Leclerc then Euloge Mallet and finally Michel Landry),
  • Henriette,
  • Marcelline,
  • Prudente,
  • Alexandre (m. Emelie Albert),
  • Olive (m. Hilaire Duguay, son of Jean-Louis Duguay and Esther Guignard) ,
  • M. Rose (m. Dosithe Duguay, son of Aime Duguay and Marthe Mallet),
  • Julie (m. Eugene Godin),
  • Nicolas (m. Obeline Mallet),
  • Gustave,
  • Eugene (m. Victoria Godin),
  • M. Louise,
  • Romain

[Note: The last four children are listed by Donat Robichaud but not  Fidele Theriault.]

  1. Does anyone have any information about either Andre or his daughter Mary Josephine Chiasson? Mary is my great grandmother and I would love to know more about her and the Chiasson/Gionet side of the family? Thank you greatly.
