Index: Native Surname Census Extracts

These census posts  are part of a larger project to identify the surnames that have appeared among Indigenous, Metis and Mixed-heritage people over the past few hundred years across what is now Canada.

Wherever possible, I’ve posted census links to the individual surnames – but either way there is always a link to the overall census at the foot of the post under External Links.  In addition, some of the older posts have orange colour coding. If a surname is orange-coloured it means that it appears in the marriage records on this site. Unfortunately, for technical reasons, the most recent posts don’t yet have this orange coding.

You may also be interested in two companion series of posts. The first  –  Canadian Marriage Extracts,  consists of transcribed marriage records. The second more recent project is a steadily growing series of Surname Anchor Posts.  Each surname post is dedicated to just one surname and its variations across Canada and over the past few hundred years.

Note:  The goal of all these projects is to arrive at a representative sampling of the surnames. The list is not comprehensive and it relies primarily on settler records (non-indigenous). In all cases, indigenous peoples have the true knowledge of these surnames and of their peoples’ genealogy.

This project is meant simply  as a jumping-off point for people who want to answer the questions: Has one of my surnames ever appeared in connection with indigenous or mixed-heritage records?  And if  so, where and when and among which peoples?

  1. On one of your posts, I followed a link that showed native marriages from the 1900’s
On 8/5/1901 Louis Jocks married Anne McComber in st. Francois xXavier parish, in caughnawaga
How can I get more detail of this marriage, trying to trace my ancestry to Louis Jocks? Are the parish records available online?appreciate all your posts!

    • Hello Glenn,
At one point I had a membership to Ancestry.com so many of the marriages I list came from there. My second source is the BMS2000 registry. If you google that you’ll find it. The challenge is that the surnames in that period are frequently moving back and forth between the Anglicized version of the name and the Iroquois surname.

  2. I have been searching my roots in maine. This lead to the broomfeild, deer, Pottle story read from John and James Pottle family bible. It also says in there James George no more know, same for Thomas, Samuel. I searched in Rigolet in birth and baptism and found what looks like early 1777 Thomas, Mary were the parents in the bible story who remarried and had more children rigolet not online any more. The problem liking maine with Labrador is I can’t find boarder crossings years about 1790 1799. I am certain my family links there, why every name I found in maine are the same as I found 1911. My dates start in 1810 my search took me to Whitefield cemetery I found James M Pottle, George, Samuel ages on tomb stones almost gone point is I can find no records on there except tomb stones. In maine the pottles married Moody’s and Bailey’s
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can be reached at wishihadgoldeberyl@gmail

    • Hello John,
The only thing I can recommend is to contact this historical society in Rigolet –

      http://www.townofrigolet.com/home/rigolet_heritage_society.htm

They may be able to help. Good luck with your search!

    • Hi. I too have had trouble linking to the Labrador Pottles. Belinda would have been born in the 1840’s. Her father was John Pottle and on her marriage record he was a fisherman from Labrador. Belinda married Absalom Rich and had two sons. They were from the Rigolet area, but came to St. John’s when Absalom died sometime around 1870. I can’t find a John Pottle old enough to be Belinda’s father.

      • I have a lot of information in maine but if that’s all you have is one record I don’t believe I am interested in sharing what I have. Why because I have spent ten long years off and on going through federal census it was hard to follow with faded records. So you must understand the amount of hard work that went into finding what I have found. I have found online that there are lazy good miners that want other people to do all the leg work. So if you have more than what you say I will help other wise your on your own.

Anything for the pottles has been hard to find very poor record keeping in maine.

      • It was a post from Broomfield, Pottle and Deer families
The names given were from the Jim Pottle family bible, it listed the siblings and the parents and Jim’s farther and brother. The earliest dates were from 1809 up to the 1880’s what stood out to me was the names mentioned were the same names in my family that I am searching for. The thing is the years are a little off I started searching those names in 1820 my guys were already around 20 years old here they only list the heads of household but start listing all family members by 1850’s into 1860 the female names also are the same for daughters and there wives.

        • Hi,
I am very interested in reading the article on ” Broomfield, Pottle & Deer Families”. Would someone please tell me how I can view it? I am also researching those families and perhaps they are relatives.
          Thank you,
          Ethel

  4. I have searched for boarder crossings but due to raiding rebels and Indians fighting was ramped a lot of records have burnt. Did find a John in labrador around 1577 or 1677 by the time I got to library to print was taken off line. Trust me tracing the pottles has been a challenge the names listed in the Broomfield deer story I can only find grave stones and no records for or family. But did find Bailey there and here who must have married labrador but no records from there or here

    • You are most kind, John. I really appreciate the comments coming from a fellow family historian.
I was very much helped in my first years by fellow researchers – although a lot more of it was offline or my email. Or at the local LDS library.
      Those were the days 🙂
      Have a nice day,
      Evelyn

  6. Hi Evelyn
I wanted to ask you about this, to me it looks like a mistake like I find on ancestry and the reason I only us the census and not ancestry. Particularly in my family tree I have found this very issue a number of times. In my tree Marry is Alfreds mother. The way I read this is Alfred is the head of household and Mary is Alfreds mother. Then it makes even more scenes if you look at the age of Mary 73

    Pottle Alfred M Head S Dec 44
    9 3 Pottle Mary F Mother W Mar 73
    10 3 Pottle Daniel M Nephew S Jul 14

In the marriage records you list Mary and Alfred as Married the other Alfred is a young child of 7

  7. Here’s little Alfred, I know it gets confusing and kinda hard to follow when your brother, uncle or son with the same name marries a woman with the same name as your wife.
Pottle Joseph Rigolet M Head M Oct 36
    2 64 Pottle Mary J F Wife M Sep 35
    3 64 Pottle Jemimah F Daughter S Jul 11
    4 64 Pottle Charles M Son S Nov 8
    5 64 Pottle Alfred M Son S Nov 7
    6 64 Pottle Henry M Son S May 4
