Girouxs of Granby | Evelyn in Montreal

Jason A Giroux says:

1, Hi Evelyn. I did a little research, and as far as I can tell, it was Alcibiades A.(lexander) Giroux, one Feb. 23, 1885, who first came to the United States from Canada. I believe his wife’s name was Mona. They had two children, at least, that I know of, Richard and Don.

He was a physician and was from Granby, Quebec. His parents were Alexander and Melina (Masse) Giroux.

After receiving his medical degree in 1908, he moved to Duluth, Minnesota to practice medicine.

Some of this information was told to me by my father, but he did not know much about him aside from his name and that he was a physician. I found this article that provided the other details I mentioned here:

So hopefully that gives us something to go on. I am really interested in learning more about how/if this relates back to the original Giroux clan of Quebec, any information to get me pointed in the right direction would be hugely appreciated.

Information

The first three couples are information from the BMS2000.

Alexandre Giroux (son of Joseph Giroux and Cecile Pinsonnault) married Melina Masse (daughter of Treffle Masse and Olympe Marchesault) on April 23rd, 1884 in Notre-Dame Prish in Granby (Shefford) Quebec.

Joseph Giroux (son of Jean-Baptiste Giroux and Osithe Robert) married Cecile Pinsonneault (daughter of Amable Pinsonnneualt and Marie Beaudin) on November 11th, 1845 in St. Remi (Naperville) Quebec.

Jean Baptiste Giroux (first married to Catherine Jolivet  and Osithe Robert (daughter of Pierre Robert and Cecile Hebert) were married on August 15th, 1814 in St-Philippe Parish in Laprairie, Quebec.

At this point I don’t find a record for a Jean Baptiste Giroux and a Catherine Jolivet. Skimming through various online family trees, the first marriage seems to be listed as a Jean Baptiste Giroux and Marguerite or Marguerite Catherine Jolivet (sometimes Jolivet dit Lepine as the surname).  If this is indeed the correct information, then Jean Baptiste Giroux would be the son of another Jean Baptiste Giroux and Marie Denier which would bring you to within a generation of the original settler.

I suggest you now work with some Giroux specialists and good luck with your search!

This is one of a series of posts organized under the heading Evelyn in Montreal where I chronicle some of the work I have done with other family historians and genealogists. Some information is original to this site but some has previously appeared at Genforum, Rootsweb and other genealogy boards. I am reproducing them here as those boards are closing down in order to preserve my connections with those family researchers.

  2. I am Don Giroux, Jr. My Grandfather was Dr. A. A. Giroux from Granby. He married Katheryn Tetu. Her pet name was Mana. They had 4 children, Lois, Glen, Don (my father) and Dick. Don and Dick are still living in Mankato, Minnesota. Let me know if you want to talk more. What is your connection?
