Savoie Genealogy | Shippegan early settlers

 

The first Savoies settled in the village of the Robichauds in an area that was eventually renamed Savoy Landing. The first settlers were Joseph Savoie and his first wife Isabelle Anastasie Robichaud (daughter of Jean-Baptiste Robichaud and Felicity Cyr) and his second wife Suzanne Roussel (widow of Jean Desroches). Roussel Genealogy | founding family of Shippegan, New Brunswick

 

The founding Roussels in Goulet were Simon Roussel (son of Didier Roussel and Madeleine Hache) who married Barbe Thebeau (daughter of Mathurin Thebeau and Catherine Duval) on February 21st, 1814.

Their children included:

  • Basile (m. Sara Mallet),
  • Anne,
  • Lazare (m. Marie McGrath, daughter of Urbain McGrath and Euphorisme Brideau) and probably the
  • Henri Roussel  who married Celanie or Melanie Pelagie Basque.

I recently found what I believe to be the birth record of my 3-greats-grandfather, Edward (Edouard) Montminy in the L’Acadie, Quebec church records. He’s listed as “Joseph Edouard Montminy”, born October 24, 1803 to Pierre Montminy and Marguerite Deniger. It was earlier believed that her maiden name was “Lemieux,” apparently from a translation of Edward’s marriage record to Zoe Campbell (dated February 28, 1832 in L’Acadie), which lists her as such.The record also notes that Marguerite was deceased at that time, so maybe they remembered her maiden name wrong.
