Main Index: Native/First Peoples/Metis Surnames | Census Extracts

This is part of a larger project to locate surnames carried by Inuit, First Nations, Metis and mixed-heritage people from across Canada. In this series of posts, I list surnames transcribed from census documents ranging primarily from 1881 to 1921. With the exception of the 1921 returns, you can click on each surname to reach the records for just that surname. Alternatively you can scroll down to External Links for an overall main link. Orange-coloured surnames also appear in the companion series – Native – First Peoples – Metis  [Canadian Marriage Extracts], although the names may be spelled differently.

  1. I’m trying to find out if my great great great great grandfather John Umlah was of Mik Mal descent?

    • Hello!
You would need to leave a bit more information. Ideally you state your great grandfather’s name along with the name of his spouse (hopefully maiden name), and any children. That allows for a search of church marriage/birth records. In addition, you would need to leave an approximate date range of his life and where he lived during his life.
At the moment I’m working on a major project but if you leave that information here then someone else might pop in with what you need – and if not, I’ll eventually be back to help.
      Have a good day,
