Index: The Mi’kmaq in Canadian Census Records
Main Index: Native/First Peoples/Metis Surnames | Census Extracts
This is where I place links to my growing collection of Mi’kmaq-related Canadian census records as well as Mi’kmaq surname posts.
Each census link below leads to a post with a list of the surnames carried by Mi’kmaq in a single given subdistrict at one point in time. Where technically possible, I’ve linked to each surname individually. Where I couldn’t do that I’ve made a link to the subdistrict. In all cases I’ve linked to records that you can access free of charge.
Each surname post below leads to a post which collates all the information about a given surname that appears on this A Canadian Family blog.

I wish to acknowledge – as a settler – that these were traditional territories
that were already inhabited and first named by indigenous peoples.

Hello,
I’m wondering if I could have the name “Kate Hurley” looked up in records to see if the last name connects to any Mi’kmaq families through marriage or if she perhaps belonged to a tribe.
She is a name my family has received in trying to track down the band we belong to and how long ago our family left reserve.
Thank you.

Would you have a time period and the location – at least the province?

It would either be Nova Scotia or Newfoundland. Time period would be the 1800’s (more specifically somewhere in-between 1830 to 1900).
Thanks.

Hello, I am looking to find out what group of people my native ancestry is from. My relative is Sophie Babeau. Born April 14, 1819 and died Jan 8, 1890. She married Cyprien Lefebvre and Nov 19, 1839 in St. Constant, Quebec. I am wondering if she was Mi’kmaq

I was wondering about the surnames Vivian or Wheeler in the Bonavista Bay area of Newfoundland – if there may be some connection to the Mi’kmaq peoples? This would be around the late 1800s into the early 1900s. Thanks for anything you can provide.

Hello
Can someone help please?
My elderly step mother is of micmaq descent born in the UK and never met her father.
I’m looking for a photo or any information on her father please, his details taken from his army records are –
Johnny Joseph Johnson born 15 June 1919 in bonaventure, restigouche, Quebec
His army number was G-5227, his records also show that when he was in the army his next of kin was his wife
Elizabeth Mary Johnson they had two children at the time Mary Elizabeth Johnson aged 2 and one unnamed.
His wife is not my step mother’s, mother who was a lady from Kent, UK. My step mother was conceived when Johnny Joseph Johnson was posted to the UK in 1943
Would love to find a photo of Johnny as his daughter has never seen him but any information on him or his family members will be greatly appreciated please
Thanks very much

Hello,
Hoping someone can help me.
My great grandmother is a Nova Scotia Loyalist and Indigenous. She was born between 1880-1884. Her name was Margaret Gero or Gerow and married name Desmond. She was raised on the reserve Paqtnkek. She married a black man and my grandmother didn’t have status. I have cousins/aunts/uncles that still live on the reservation. I want to know more about the history but no one will tell me. I’ve reached out to the band several times but no response 😦
