Early colonist Andre Barbeau dit Laforest was from Fontenay-le-Comte (Vendee, France) and arrived in New France about 1662. As an early pioneer he cleared land and farmed. His first wife was Marie Jaudon and they were married in 1699. After her death he married Marie Gagne in 1686. The couple settled in St-Joseph-de-Charlesbourg and had two daughters and a son.
