Index: The Ojibwe, Ojibway, Chippewa & Saulteaux in Canadian Census Records

Core Index: First Peoples Genealogy and History

Main Index: Native/First Peoples/Metis Surnames | Census Extracts

This is my still-growing list of links which will eventually include extracts of census records of the Ojibwe, Ojibway, Chippewa and Saulteaux peoples who resided in Canada between 1881 and 1921.  It does not contain the Chippeweyan Dene nation.

Each link below leads to a post with a list of the surnames carried by these peoples in a single given subdistrict at one point in time. Where technically possible, I’ve linked to each surname individually. Where I couldn’t do that I’ve made a link to the subdistrict. In all cases I’ve linked only to records that you can access free of charge.

Other First Nations census records are listed in these other indexes:  The Abenaki,  The AlgonquinThe Cree,   The Innu Montagnais Naskapi,  The Iroquois Confederacy The Maliseet and The Mi’kmaq.  If you’re not sure what you’re looking for you can also consult the  Main Index: Native/First Peoples/Metis Surnames | Census Extracts, That is where I catalogue ALL the First Nations census records as I find them.

If you are looking for First Nations or mixed marriages, then you may find the  index of Native/First Peoples/Metis Marriage Extracts helpful. It includes extracts from marriage records of couples or their offspring,  as well as couples listed as  parents on baptismal certificates.  The marriage records are constantly updated so check back often for updates!
