This is a series of micro posts about the pioneers of Shippagan in Gloucester County, New Brunswick. Each post is organized around initial information from Msg. Donat Robichaud’s Le Grand Chipagan: Histoire de Shippagan, supplemented with genealogical data from F. Theriault’s Les Families de Caraquet and is now being gradually enriched with information from other sources. These are mostly French-language sources and some aren’t easily available, so if you need more information please leave your questions in a comment box below  🙂

 

 

I descend from the Shippegan Doucets through my maternal grandmother.

Etienne Stephen Doucet (son of Etienne Doucet and Marie Landry) of Caraquet married Marthe Witzell (daughter of William Witzell and Mary Topham) on February 18th, 1833. The couple lived near the Shippegan pier on a plot of land obtained from Marthe’s father. In 1851 they sold the land to Charles Delagarde and moved to Pointe Brule.  Their children were:

 

  • Etienne Stephen (m. Veronique Chiasson, daughter of David Chiasson and Suzanne Duguay) and then  (m. Helene Gouret, daughter of Joseph Gouret and Phoebe Gionet),
  • Frederic (m. Monique Lanteigne, daughter of James Lanteigne and Marie Hebert),
  • Marie Dina (m. Lin Landry, son of Michel Landry and Marguerite Allard),
  • Mathilde (m. Alexandre Duguay, son of Aime Duguay and Marthe Mallet),
  • Annie Fannie Agnes (m. Romuald Gionet (widower of Clotilde Duguay) and then Agapit McGrath (son of Jean McGrath and Rosalie Robichaud),
  • William Guillaume (Marie Delarousbie, widow of Seraphin Doiron),
  • Marie (m. Thomas Leclerc dit Labouelle),
  • Marthe (m. Ferdinand Lanteigne, son of James Lanteigne and Marie Hebert).

 

A second branch was headed by Joseph C. Doucet (son of Charles Doucet and Marie Arsenaulta master carpenter and woodworker who was originally from Bathurst. He was married first to Sophie Comeau and later to Marguerite DeGrace (daughter of Pierre Degrace and Adelaide Robichaud). Joseph and Sophie’s children included:

  • Jacques James (m. Marie Degrace, daughter of Pierre DeGrace and Adelaide Robichaud),
  • Marie (m. Chrysologue DeGrace, son of Pierre DeGrace and Adelaide Robichaud),
  • Luce Lucie (m. Thomas DeGrace, son of Pierre DeGrace and Adelaide Robichaud),
  • Joseph,
  • John,
  • Rosanna,
  • Ann,
  • Michael Michell,
  • Anne,
  • Guillaume William,
  • Elisabeth (m. Michel Blanchard (son of Augustin Blanchard and Colette Cormier)
  • Sophie (m. Philias Doiron, son of Christin Doiron and Olive Gionet).

 

Joseph and his second wife Marguerite DeGrace had the following children:

  • Marguerite Cesaree (m. Edouard LeBouthillier, son of Edouard LeBouthillier and Angele Legere).
  • Charles (m. Catherine Comeau (daughter of Leonard Comeau and Angelique Roy). Marie Philomene (m. Joseph Lanteigne, son of Nazaire Lanteigne and Christine Gionet),
  • Marie Emilie (m. Patrice Legere, son Lazare Legere and Julie Poirier),
  • Joseph-Marie-Francois aka Frank (m.Vitaline Legere, daughter of Lazare Legere and Julie Poirier),
  • Rose-Anne aka Rose (m. Jean dit Gallin Gionet, son of Jean Gionet and Sara LeBouthillier, and then m. Maurice Gionet, widower of Anne Paulin),
  • Marie Lisette (born deaf-mute and died young),
  • Stanislas (died young),
  • Joseph (m. Genevieve Jane Legere, daughter of Charles Legere and Charlotte Poirier),
