The Canivets | Pioneer Families of Caraquet

Index: Pioneer Families of Caraquet

These micro posts present the first generation of each of the families that established different surnames found in Caraquet, New Brunswick. Most of the information is drawn from Fidele Theriault’s genealogical dictionary “Les Familles de Caraquet”. His book is in French and offers a lot more information including family trees of the first generations (with precise dates)  and in many cases explanations of how the first pioneers arrived in Caraquet and other fascinating anecdotes. If you don’t have access to the book you can contact me for extra information by leaving a comment underneath this post.

The first Caraquet Canivets were Jean Canivet  and Agnes Bouthillier, daughter of Joseph Bouthillier, and Angelique Giraud dit St-Jean. It’s believed that this might be the Jean Canivet who was from Normandy and who was living at one point in Lorembec (Cape Breton).

Their child was:

  • Therese Canivet (m. Henri Chenard, son of Guillaume Chenard and Anne Parent of St. Roch-des-Aulnais, about 1775) and then (m.1789, Jean-Baptiste Paulin, whose first wife was Elisabeth Gasse).   Therese and Henri Chenard’s  children were:
    • Guillaume (m. Marie Arsenault, daughter of Jean-Baptiste Arsenault and Perpetue Savoie). Their children were:
    • Genevieve (m.about 1797, Pierre dit Pierriche Lanteigne, son of Louis Lanteigne and Marguerite Chapadeau). Their children were:
    • Henri (m. Theotiste Bouthillier, son of Rene Lebouthillier and Genevieve Chiasson),
    • Francois who died as an infant.
  • Therese Canivet and her second husband  Jean-Baptiste Paulin
    had the following children:

    • Alexis (m. Marie-Claire Bouthillier, daughter of Rene Bouthillier and Genevieve Chiasson, 1815)
    • Basile (m. Veronique Gionet, daughter of Jean Gionet and Veronique Duguay, 1815)
    • Germain / Sebastien (m. Monique Blanchard, daughter of Raphael Blanchard and Pelagie Doucet, 1817).
