These micro posts present the first generation of each of the families that established different surnames found in Caraquet, New Brunswick. Most of the information is drawn from Fidele Theriault’s genealogical dictionary “Les Familles de Caraquet”. His book is in French and offers a lot more information including family trees of the first generations (with precise dates)  and in many cases explanations of how the first pioneers arrived in Caraquet and other fascinating anecdotes. Caraquet history

 

The Caraquet Blackhalls descend from James Blackhall (son of Robert Blackhall and Isabelle Reid of Kemnay, Aberdeenshire, Scotland) and Mary Synet /Sinnet who was of Irish Catholic descent. They were married in 1826.

Their children were:

  • James Gordon Canning (m. 1860, Eliza Gordon Doran (daughter of John Doran and Mary Gordon, Shippagan)
    • Isabella Mary Belle (did not marry)
    • James Albert E. (born about 1863)
    • Eliza Florence Lillie (m. 1894, Peter Fiott)
    • Louisa Clara (m 1894, George Dalton LeRiche)
    • John Robert Jack (m. 1903, Eva L. Graves)
    • Harry William (m. 1913, Mabel Kerr, daughter of Alexander Kerr)
    • Francis Ernest Thomas (m. 1903, Bertha Mowat)
    • Annie Elisabeth (Alfred T. Alexander)
  • Mary (m. 1848, Thomas Kerr, son of Gavin Kerr, Pokeshaw, formerly married to Helen Young)
  • Robert M. (emigrated to New York)
  • Jane Esther (m. 1856, Robert Nixon, son of Robert Nixon and Mary Watson)
  • Helen (m. John Sewell, son of Joseph Sewell and Francoise Ferguson, Pokemouche)
  • Thomas Richard (m. 1868, Blanche Kerr, daughter of Thomas Kerr and Helen Young, Pokeshaw)
  • Richard  He migrated to the United States where he eventually died by drowning. He and his wife Blanche Little Kerr (daughter of Thomas Kerr and Helen Young of Pokeshaw) had many children including: Robert Young Alexander (m. Annie Gordon), Thomas Irving (m. Ella Nellie Rielly), Arthime John aka Arty (m. Augusta Gussie Turner) and (m. Rose Philipps), Richard Howard (m. Estelle Rathe), William Percy (m. Elisabeth Waterbury), Mabel Helen (m. Nicolas de Ste Croix, son of Nicolas Francois de Ste Croix and Mary-Ann Godfrey).
