Guimond |  Metis, Ojibwa, Saulteaux | Surname Anchor Post

Index:  Indigenous, Metis & Mixed-Heritage Surname Anchor Posts

Each of these posts is dedicated to one surname that is carried by someone connected to indigenous, Metis or mixed-heritage people in Canada.  Please be aware that it’s a synthesis of the information I’ve collected in my personal research throughout the years and is by no way complete!

  • Surname lists: Surname Anchor Posts Metis (ON)
  • Regions:  Manitoba, Ontario, Western Canada
  • Ethnicity:  Metis, Ojibwa, Saulteaux
  • Associated surnames:  Bear, Cochrane, Courchene, Fontaine, Johnston, Jourdain, Keeper, Linklater, Potvin, Raymond, Swampy, Vincent.
  • Misc.:  1. The known Metis line of Red River Guimonds  begins with two Joseph Guimond   (prob. French Canadian) and his wife Marie Charette (origin unknown) through their children: Augustin Guimond (m. First Nations Woman, Mary Anne), Frances Guimond (m. Moise Fontaine) and descendants who married into First Nations lineages. 2. An alternative French spelling for Guimond is “Guimont”,  2. The Red River Ancestry site suggest that J. Guimond was likely a French Canadian from Quebec. I wonder (and this is pure speculation) whether he might have been a New Brunswick Guimond.
