  • 1. The following Metis Pauls (or their spouses) were associated with the 1885 Resistance: Angelique Paul (m. Jean Baptiste Laplante), the widow Josephte Paul (m. Tourond), Madeleine Paul (m. Joseph Ouellette III), Madeleine Paul (m. Magnus Bernard Birston) and Captain Bernard Paul (m. Marie Gervais). The 1885 North-West Resistance by the Metis and other indigenous peoples (Cree, Kainai, Piikani, Saulteaux and Siksika) and was in response to broken treaties, starvation and encroachment on their lands by new settlers in what are now Saskatchewan and Alberta.   • 2. Paul was used as a surname by the following Algonquin couple from the Maniwaki region:  Pierre / Peter Paul / Wabiceci / Aiajawasiketch and Madeleine Wemontacinikwe.
  • 3. Hudson’s Bay Archives has service records for five individuals carrying the Paul surname. Note: HBC service records relate to employees who worked in traditional indigenous territories and who may or may not have started mixed-heritage families.
