- Misc.:
- 1. Germain is sometimes spelled Jerman. Some individuals have held the Germain and St. Germain surnames during their lifetime.
- 2. In 1872/1873 , a government survey was undertaken to determine the precise international border between Canada and the U.S.A. Part of the survey was assisted by Metis guides and Chippewa men who were employed as scouts. One of these Metis scouts was Pierre St. Germain (son of Joseph Brissard dit St. Germain & Marie Cadotte). He was married to Genevieve Gosselin (daughter of Michel Gosselin & Marguerite Assiniboine) whose brother Francois Gosselin was also in the 49th Rangers. - 3. There were two St. Germains associated with the 1885 Resistance – Frederic St. Germain (m. Melanie Parenteau) and Veronique St. Germain (m. Moise Parenteau). The 1885 North-West Resistance by the Metis and the Cree, Kainai, Piikani, Saulteaux and Siksika peoples took place against a backdrop of starvation, broken treaties and encroachment by new settlers in Saskatchewan and Alberta. The resistance fighters eventually lost and Canada’s federal government asserted its control over the area. They went by multiple names… Cureux, St. Germain, Squirrel, Lecureux, Quereux… There is a Maliseet land petition from New Brunswick with Joseph Squirrel on it. They are descended from the family connected to the Michel Cureux House in Quebec.” [St. Germain Baptiste [Find A Grave], Maison Michel-Cureux [Alamy]]
