- Misc.: –
- 1. In 1884, British General Charles Gordon was trapped in Sudan’s capital city Khartoum, so a rescue mission was organized that would involve watercraft on the River Nile. Canadian Voyageurs of Metis and First Nations background were recruited to carry out this mission. The Voyageurs succeeded in reaching Khartoum but they were too late to save Gordon as the city had already fallen to the Mahdists. One of these Voyageurs was Joseph Smith, son of William Smith and Charlotte Mowat. [Source: The Nile Voyageurs 1884-1885, Louis Riel Institute]
- 2. The following Smiths (or their spouses) were involved in the 1885 Resistance: Alphonsine Smith (m. Joachim Parenteau), Gabriel Smith, Henri Smith Jr. (m. Elise Parenteau), Henri Smith Sr. (m. Marguerite Wells), Henriette Smith (m. Raphael Parenteau), Honore Smith, Marguerite Smith (m. Bernard Montour), Pelagie Smith (m. Isidore Dumas) and Rosalie Smith (m. Jean Baptiste Primeau). The 1885 North-West Resistance included Metis and other indigenous peoples (Cree, Kainai, Piikani, Saulteaux and Siksika) and was in response to broken treaties, starvation and encroachment on their lands by new settlers in what are now Saskatchewan and Alberta. The resistance fighters were defeated and Canada’s federal government asserted its control over the area.
