In 1872/1873 , a government survey was undertaken to determine the precise international border between Canada and the U.S.A.  Part of the survey was assisted by Metis guides and Chippewa men who were employed as scouts.   One of these scouts was Abraham Belanger and Marie Anne Versaille’s son John Belanger who was married to Marie Josephine Gosselin (daughter of Francois Gosselin). John’s sister Marie Belanger was married to another 49th Ranger (Anathase Lepine). Besides taking part in the boundary survey, John Belanger “is believed to have assisted his father and brothers during the 1885 Resistance. His father Abraham Sr. was a buffalo hunter who lived at Pembina and St. Norbert before moving to Batoche. Abraham Belanger Sr. was present at the March 24, 1884 secret planning meeting for bringing Louis Riel to Batoche and was a Captain of one of the 19 companies led by Gabriel Dumont during the 1885 Metis Resistance. ”  [Source: The Boundary Commission’s Metis Scouts: The 49th Rangers, Larry Haag & Lawrence Barkwell].
