  • Many Metis Vandals (or their spouses) were involved in the Resistance. They were: Antoine Vandal Sr. (m. Isabelle Beauchemin), Antoine Vandal Jr., (m. Alphonsine Henry), Catherine Vandal (m. Baptiste Deschamps), Francois Vandal (m. Isabelle Deschamps), Isabelle Vandal (m. Maurice Henry / Honore), Jean Baptiste Vandal Jr. (m. Henriette Branconnier), Joseph “La Pioche” Vandal (m. Louise Lavallee), Joseph Vandal (m. Julienne Branconnier), Joseph Vandal (m. Elisa Beauregard dit Champagne), Melanie/ Malvina Vandale (m. Jean Baptiste Rocheleau Jr.), Pierre Modeste Vandal (m. Adelaide Parenteau),  Pierre Vandal (m. Elise Poitras), Roger Vandal (m. Isabelle Branconnier), William Vandal (m. Virginie Boyer) and finally, Captain Jean Baptiste Vandal (m. Marie Primeau). The 1885 North-West Resistance included Metis and other indigenous peoples (Cree, Kainai, Piikani, Saulteaux and Siksika) and was in response to broken treaties, starvation and encroachment on their lands by new settlers in what are now Saskatchewan and Alberta.
