  • 2. The Tomah surname appears on the University of Cape Breton’s list of Common Mi’kmaw Surnames.
  • 3. Some of the earliest Red River Metis couples with the Thomas surname include: (a) John Thomas (English or Welsh) and Margaret (Ojibway / Cree) who left descendants through: Charles Thomas (m. Hannah Mannall), Charlotte Thomas (m. Peter Spence), Eleanor Thomas (m. Thomas, Thomas, William Richards & Peter Foy), Elizabeth Thomas (m. Richard Story Robins, William James Russell), Frances Thomas (m. Andrew Stewart, George Johnston), John Thomas (m. Mary O’Connor / Meenish), Nancy Thomas (m. Thomas Hodgson, Alexander Christie) and (b) William Thomas (English) and Catherine Best. (Metis). Their offspring were: Catherine Thomas (m. Thomas Cooper, Richard Smith), Charlotte Thomas (m. John Vincent), Eleanor Thomas (m. William Linklater), Matilda Thoma (m. Frank Moar) Nancy Ann Thomas (m. John Moar / Moore), Richard Thomas (m. Eleanor Thomas).
  • 4. There were two couples with a Thomas spouse associated with the 1885 Resistance. They were Charles Thomas (m. Helene Letendre) and Eleanor / Helene Thomas (m. Lawrence Garneau). The 1885 North-West Resistance included Metis and other indigenous peoples (Cree, Kainai, Piikani, Saulteaux and Siksika) and was in response to broken treaties, starvation and encroachment on their lands by new settlers in what are now Saskatchewan and Alberta.
