Former North West Company (NWC) carpenter, Jean-Baptiste Charette and his wife Charlotte Sansregret, built a “sturdy oak storey-and-a-half cabin” at Riviere Sale as a stopping house for travellers – the first commercial venture at the location”. See External Links below for source and more information. 3. Benoni Bellerose and Monique Charette are mentioned in Western Scrip records as early French Canadian settlers in Slave Lake. 4. Several Metis Charettes (or their spouses) were involved in the 1885 North-West Resistance (formerly The North-West Rebellion). They include Daniel Charette Sr. (m. The 1885 North-West Resistance included Metis and other indigenous peoples (Cree, Kainai, Piikani, Saulteaux and Siksika) and was in response to broken treaties, starvation and encroachment on their lands by new settlers in what are now Saskatchewan and Alberta. The resistance fighters were defeated and Canada’s federal government asserted its control over the area.  [Source: Veterans and Families of the 1885  Northwest Resistance, Lawrence Barkwell, Louis Riel Institute].
