  1. Hey.. So glad to find your site. One day when time permits I’ll find those Canadian families I’ve done some research on. They are both for friends of mine I’ve done work on.

    Glad to meet you.

  12. I am looking for information about Marie Louise Deneaul, born 1838 in Caughnawaga, Roussillon, Quebec. She was either my great-grandfather’s (Maxim Raymond) sister-in-law or his mother. (Pihpe’ or who gave the info for his death certificate may have skipped a generation). The Raymonds and ancestors lived for generations in the La Prairie – St. Constant area.
I have a picture of him and some of his children on my Facebook page. He said he was part Native; but that it was his great-grandmother.

  14. Hi Evelyn.
Great site! I found the surname Laura on your Kahnawake surname list. I have been searching for my 3rd g grandmother Margaret Leroy. She married francis Labreche, he was French but raised around Montreal. Family tradition says that there were labreches (also spelled LaBrash) just south of Montreal. I have a tin-type(metal) photo of 2 women, one of them looks native. Since I can’t find any info on Margaret leroy I wondered if she may have been native as there are family traits that indicate this. When I found the surname Laura on your site it made me wonder if she could have come from there although the timeline of my Margaret was c. 1800. Do you know how i could find more info on this?
    Thanks, Richard

    • Richard: I have been searching for information on Peter Andrew Labrash born 1879 in Ontario. His parents are listed as John Labrash and Jane Pemebrton. We have received some information that leads us to think that he was adopted or taken in by this family as he spoke French and looked Native while his siblings spoke only English and did not look at all like him. While searching I came across some information regarding Francis Labrash b. 1789 and Margaret Leroi b. 1790. Did you ever find the genealogy information that you were looking for in 2010 on the A Canadian Family website? Would this information be of value to you?

      • Hello Deborah,

I have been researching the Labrash tree of Francis and Margaret Labrash for some years. They are my 3x Grandparents.

In my search I have come across John and Jane (Pemberton) Labrash. I have son Peter ALLAN Labrash, born 5 Mar 1879, Murray Twp, Northumberland Co, Ontario (source: Ontario Archives, Births, Microfilm MS929-39, Reg# 020870). He married Harriet Gould (b-1881, Simcoe Co,Ontario) on 31 March 1904 in Parry Sound District, Ontario. (source: Ontario Archives, Marriages, Microfilm MS932-115, Reg# 014825).
All the best in your research.

        • Thank you Robert – I have that information as well – but nothing more on John Labrash or Jane Pemberton, which is why I have started to search outside of Ontario. I have been very lucky finding information for my mother’s mother’s side of her family (Gould), and my husband’s family (Stevens and Henderson) but have hit a brick wall with my grandfather Peter Andrew Labrash’s parents. – He and my grandmother (Harriet) lived in Parry Sound and Hamilton. Thanks again. Deborah

          • I seem to recall having info on John and Jane continuing to live in Northumberland and Hastings Co. I think Jane died about 1895 and John remarried. I think he died in Campbellford, Northumberland Co. I recall some Labrashes buried in the two cemeteries there and I jotted it down, but since John (as yet) not part of my tree, I just filed it away. All this info is from emails sent to me over the years, and i have made no attempt to source it and prove it. I will be in Campbellford next weekend and will take a walk again through the area. But i do believe John and Jane stayed in the area.

  15. This is just an additional comment I need to make. It was part of our culture to give any one who joined our community ( in the early 1600’s to 1700’s and as late as the 1800’s) a native name. Jesuit priests also received native names. The is well documented in several studies done on Native American People. Some who were adopted by the mohawk nation, became mohawks regardless of their nationality. They were not mohawk, but citizens of the Mohawk Nation. Just as Quebec increases it’s population by inviting different nationalities to gain more Quebeckers. As A Mohawk, I can honestly say that we are not allowed to do this. The Governments probably fear we may rise up and over take them. In the early 1600’s our nation was well over 30,000 in just several villages alone. By the early 1700’s we were almost extinct with several thousand of us left. Mostly scattered throughout Northern Newyork, ontario and Quebec. Small pox infested blankets were given in trade for furs, to the women and children. As well as the firearms that were used to intimidate and kill almost all of us. It’s depressing when you think about it. For an accurate account of life with the Jesuits, read Darren Bonaparte’s A Lily Among The Thorns. Darren is a Mohawk from Akwesasne.

She is a Lacroix dit Langevin who as far as we know have lived in the Lac des Deux Montagnes area. Her dad gave her some basic info before he passed away, back as far as his grandfather. Are there online sources available ?

It is in the Evelyn in Montreal series, which means that someone had asked for this information. The query is from someone called Marlaina (possibly a pseudonym) and would have been made at Genforum or Rootsweb.
I presume that person was another descendant of this couple?

I recognize these Acadian lines but don’t see where the Metis blood line is. Where were they living at the time of the 1861 census?
How have you determined that the Native American “Rose” in the 1861 census is a daughter of Jean Pierre and Marie Rose?

  30. My Dad, George Millett had a photo studio in the 500. Block of Verdun Blvd. I recall his santa clause head with cotton beard and flashing red nose! We resided upstairs at 5707. It was over a drugstore. Sugarmans was a grocery store along there. We got sawdust from his place used on the butcher shop floor. We used for the cat litter box! We attended woodland school ,(boys side)! Grandma, grand pa and my uncle were at 804 Melrose. My moms dad, (Sandy Cameron) was killed in an explosion at a veterans hall meeting. He was holding a door so others could escape! I still recall the pipers and the cason and black horse. I still have his medals if the Legon would like them. I’m 75 now n headed to Belize I hope. 32. Hello Evelyn, I have been searching for more information about my maternal grandmother. I am fairly certain she was Algonquin. I have been told she came from the Maniwaki area of Quebec. Her name was Josephine Miness (may have been spelled as Minesse, Meness, Menesse, Mineus). I found a census record for her, but I’m not sure if it’s the same person since it shows her living on the Nedelec reserve in Quebec. Would you be able to help me? I only found out this year through a DNA test that I am part Native American. There is no one in my family left to help me.
