Most of the information is drawn from Fidele Theriault’s genealogical dictionary “Les Familles de Caraquet”. His book is in French and offers a lot more information including family trees of the first generations (with precise dates)  and in many cases explanations of how the first pioneers arrived in Caraquet and other fascinating anecdotes. Caraquet history

 

The Caraquet Deveaus descend from the carpenter Firmin Deveau (son of Joseph Deveau and Rose Michaud), most likely from Kamouraska, Quebec) and Marie-Joseph Beaulieu (daughter of Mathurin Beaulieu and Marie Guerette). The couple were married about 1800, and arrived in Caraquest in 1816. In the following years they moved first to Restigouche (1819) and then St. Basile, Madawaska (1826). Continue reading

Caraquet history

 

Note: Fidele Theriault lists the following variations for this surname: Carry, Kerey, Querry, Querret and Tiret.

The Caraquet Carrets descend from Jean-Baptiste Carret (son of Simon Carret and Marguerite Gautreau) and Charlotte Brideau (daughter of Louis Brideau and Marie-Therese Thomas who were married in 1789. It’s believed that they came from the Carret family that were found in Beaubassin and Ile St. Jean before 1755.

Jean-Baptiste and Charlotte had the following children:

  • Beloni (born 1792)
  • Laurent (m. 1823, Marie-Reine Audet, daughter of Gabriel Audet and Charlotte Leblanc)
  • Marie Ursule (born 1797)
  • Hubert (born 1800)
  • David (m. 1827, Cecile Robichaud, daughter of Jean Robichaud and Marie Bourgeois)
  • Marie-Reine (born 1805)
