Most of the information is drawn from Fidele Theriault’s genealogical dictionary “Les Familles de Caraquet”. His book is in French and offers a lot more information including family trees of the first generations (with precise dates)  and in many cases explanations of how the first pioneers arrived in Caraquet and other fascinating anecdotes. Caraquet history


The Caraquet Deveaus descend from the carpenter Firmin Deveau (son of Joseph Deveau and Rose Michaud), most likely from Kamouraska, Quebec) and Marie-Joseph Beaulieu (daughter of Mathurin Beaulieu and Marie Guerette). The couple were married about 1800, and arrived in Caraquest in 1816. In the following years they moved first to Restigouche (1819) and then St. Basile, Madawaska (1826). Continue reading

Donat Robichaud’s Le Grand Chipagan: Histoire de Shippagan, supplemented with genealogical data from F. Theriault’s Les Families de Caraquet and is now being gradually enriched with information from other sources. New Brunswick founding families - The Godins of Shippegan


There are three early Godin couples in Shippegan – Alexandre Godin (prob. the son of Pierre Godin  and Ann Robertson) and Anne DeGrace, Pierre Godin (son of Jean-Baptiste Godin and Rosalie Theriault) and Anne Robertson (daughter of James Robertson and Helene Morrison).

Alexandre Godin and Anne DeGrace‘s children included:

My name is Andy Downes and I was born in Thetford Mines Que. in 1942 ,I was brought to Windsor in 1945 and have been here ever since. My older brother Walter whom is 72 now was also born there in 1943, as was my other brother Jean Guy in 1945.

My mother told me that I was born in OKA. I and my brothers were baptized at St.Alphonsus church. I have being doing research now for at least 25 yrs trying to find my grandmother Leda Dodier whom my mother said was native, My mother’s name Mathilda Irene Lessard. My mother said her brother used to hide in St,Regis when he shot a police sheriff, must take after him! Continue reading
