List of Iroquois Confederacy Surnames (Ontario, Quebec)

Introduction This is an ever growing list of surnames carried by members of the Iroquois Confederacy. It is part of a larger project to determine surnames carried by the First Nations and Inuit peoples in Canada. This list so far is compiled from Canadian census records (primarily 1901, 1911 and 1921) from areas inhabited by people of the Iroquois Confederacy. You can reach those at the  The Iroquois Confederacy in Canadian Census Records index which leads to transcribed records for each region and links to the original census returns. Please note that this Iroquois surname list includes names held by the Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca and Tuscarora peoples who live in what are now Quebec and Ontario, as presented to census-takers.

It does not contain the surnames of the Iroquois living in the United States, nor those of other Iroquoian-speaking nations like the Huron.  NOTE OF CAUTION: Some individuals were listed as “Indian” and may not have been Iroquois (e.g.. Cabot in 1901 Sault St. Louis). So far, the list is compiled from Canadian census records (primarily 1901, 1911 and 1921) from areas inhabited by people of the Iroquois Confederacy. You can reach those at the  The Iroquois Confederacy in Canadian Census Records index Continue reading
