The LeBretons | Pioneer Families of Caraquet

Index: Pioneer Families of Caraquet

These micro posts present the first generation of each of the families that established different surnames found in Caraquet, New Brunswick. Most of the information is drawn from Fidele Theriault’s genealogical dictionary “Les Familles de Caraquet”. His book is in French and offers a lot more information including family trees of the first generations (with precise dates)  and in many cases explanations of how the first pioneers arrived in Caraquet and other fascinating anecdotes. If you don’t have access to the book you can contact me for extra information by leaving a comment underneath this post.

Pierre Gallien and Angelique Giraud dit St. Jean (Lebouthillier’s widow) are the earliest  known Caraquet couple by this surname. Fidele Theriault gives a very lengthy but rather confusing background for Pierre Gallien which I will translate at some point. If you need to know now, leave me a comment below 🙂

For now I will mention that Angelique Giraud’s parents were Gabriel Giraud and a un-named First Nations woman.

Pierre and Angeliques’s children were:

  • Adrien (m. Marguerite Duguay, daughter of Rene Duguay and Marguerite LeBreton of Paspebiac, about 1780)
  • Francois (m. Rene Duguay, son of Rene Duguay and Marguerite LeBreton of Paspebiac, 1784)

Note: Les Familles de Caraquet has the following Gallien family pictures:  [Eucher Gallien, pg. 403]
