- 1. One line of Metis Dumonts in western Canada, descends from Jean-Baptiste Dumont and his Sarcee wife Josette.
- 2. Dumond is one var. of Dumont. 3. Joseph Dumont [aka Commandant / Thisibert] and Marie Pisindawatc are an early Algonquin couple from the region of Maniwaki [Source: Jean-Guy Paquin].
- 3. Many Metis Dumonts (or their spouses) were involved in the 1885 North-West Resistance (formerly known as The North-West Rebellion). They include: Ambroise Dumont Sr. (m. Justine Short), Caroline Dumont (m. Jean-Baptiste Montour), Edouard Dumont (m. Sophie Letendre), Edouard “Opikonew” Dumont, Elie Dumont (m. Francoise Ouellette), Elizabeth Dumont (m. Moise Carriere), Isabelle / Elizabeth Dumont (m. Moise Napoleon Ouellette), Francois Dumont / Cayole, Isidore / Ecapow Dumont, Jean Baptiste Dumont, Judith Dumont (m. Pascal Montour Jr.), Louis Dumont / Cayole (m. Philomene Roussain), Mathilde Dumont, Pelagie Dumont (m. Jean Baptiste Parenteau), Patrice Dumont, Marie-Louise Patenaude), Philomene Dumont (m. Francois Ladouceur), Virginie Dumont (m. Edouard Laframboise), Of particular note were the Adjutant General Gabriel Dumont (m. Madeleine Wilkie), Captain Isidore Dumont Jr. (m. Judith Parenteau) and finally Vital Dumont dit Cayole, headman of the One Arrow Band. The 1885 North-West Resistance included Metis and other indigenous peoples (Cree, Kainai, Piikani, Saulteaux and Siksika) and was in response to broken treaties, starvation and encroachment on their lands by new settlers in what are now Saskatchewan and Alberta. The resistance fighters were defeated and Canada’s federal government asserted its control over the area.
