    • 2. An early western Metis couple were Thomas Anderson (son of Thomas Anderson and Catherine Landry) and Elizabeth Desmarais. They had a son – Henry Anderson who married Fanny Pocha / Paquin (daughter of Joseph Paquin and Marie Lapointe) and that couple had 6 children. The Andersons were among 13 families who settled in Portage as members of Reverend William Cockran’s newly formed St. Mary’s congregation [Source: Thomas Anderson, Louis Riel Institute].
    • 2.  The Red River Andersons descend from two couples: a)  James Anderson (Scottish, Orkney Islands) and his Metis wife Elizabeth Isbister through their married offspring:  Alexander Anderson (m. • 3. The  1885 North-West Resistance by the Metis and the Cree, Kainai, Piikani, Saulteaux and Siksika peoples took place against a backdrop of starvation, broken treaties and encroachment by new settlers in Saskatchewan and Alberta. The resistance fighters eventually lost and Canada’s federal government asserted its control over the area.  Anderson Metis involved in the 1885 Resistance included:  Betsy Anderson (m. Arthur Amyotte), Caleb Anderson, Charles Anderson, Eliza Anderson (m. Andrew Tate) and Nancy Sophie Anderson (m. Napoleon Boyer)  [Source: Veterans and Families of the 1885  Northwest Resistance, Lawrence Barkwell, Louis Riel Institute].
