The Bertins of Bathurst | New Brunswick

Bertin Genealogy

The first Bertin to settle in Canada was the Frenchman Joseph-Gabriel Bertin.  He was a sergeant with Montcalm’s troops (Languedoc regiment).   On November 10th, 1760 he married Marie-Josephe Lefebvre  in Cap-Sante, Quebec. It is their eldest son Dr. Jean-Joseph Bertin and his second wife Marguerite Pitre who would found the first New Brunswick line of Bertins.

Jean-Joseph Bertin‘s first wife had been Charlotte Dubois, daughter of Jean-Baptiste Dubois and Marie Helot. That marriage took place on August 11th, 1783 in Notre-Dame-de-Foy in Quebec.

After the death of his first wife, Jean-Joseph married Marguerite Pitre (daughter of Michel Pitre and Marie Orison) in 1790 in Nepisiguit. Jean-Joseph Bertin and Marguerite Pitre had the following children: Joseph (m. Louise Boudrault / Boudreau, daughter of Joseph Boudreau and Rosalie Hache, 1816 in Holy Family Church, Bathurst), Elisabeth (m. Joseph Roy, son of Joseph Norbert Roy and Madeleine Daigle, 1814 in Holy Family Church, Bathurst), Eucher (m. Angele Roy, 1823 in Bathurst), Felix (m. Marguerite Doucet, daughter of Michel Doucet and Marie-Anne Boudreau, 1825 in Holy Family Church, Bathurst), Candide (m. Luc Roy, son of Joseph Norbert Roy and Madeleine Daigle, 1820), Thomas, Lucie, Lucy or Luce (m. Jean / John Lavigne, son of Jean-Baptiste Lavigne and Modeste Hache-Gallant, 1829 in Bathurst and then Pierre Aubut, son of Michel Aubut and Madeleine Huard, 1840 in Holy Family Church, Bathurst), Francois-Xavier (m. Lucille Doucet, daughter of Cyprien Doucet and Suzanne Lejeune, 1832 in Petit Rocher), Didime (m. Celeste Doucet, 1829, Saumarez),  [Note: I haven’t personally verified the next 4 children] Cyrille (m. Helene Boudreau ?), CyrillinePierre-Lazarre and Hilaire.

  4. I’m doing a family tree for my nephew Sean Barton. It would appear his side of the family came to the States around 1900 and changed their names. The original name was Stanislaus Bertin and his wife Marie Godin. There are some references to a Virginie Aube and a Didime Bertin. Do you have any info on what the Bertins did in NB? I also notices there are two very close roads in Bathurst with family names Bertin and Godin near the end of the Bathurts runway. Thanks
