  1. I found your website very informative. It helped me fill in some blanks. You have done a great job. I must have taken years.I am descended from Ann Charlotte Luce she was my 3x Great Grand Mother. I come through the line of John Paull b17.7.1842 Jersey. Most of his descendants have stayed in the Hawkesbury District. Since recently starting my family tree I have discovered I have French, English, Irish, Scottish, Prussian and Aboriginal in me. Guess you could say I’m a “mongrel” no blue blood. Aussie say a mongrel dog is loyal and true blue and you won’t find a better mate.

  2. Hello Jo – nice to meet you!
It’s taken me years to get info as well but I’ve always been fascinated by my Jersey line AND the idea of having Australian cousins so thanks for contacting me.I see your Anne Charlotte is my great-great grandfather Philippe Luce’s sister.
Just this week I was corresponding with Australian John Clancy on the Sorsoleil board. He’s a descendant of my Philippe and your Anne Charlotte’s sister – Elizabeth Marie Luce (m.Pierre Lelievre). Are you and he acquainted?
In his post at Genforum (Sorsoleil Board), John Clancy told me that he thinks they went to Australia for the gold rush. Do you know anything about this? Or whether they went together?
    Au revoir, from up here

    • Hi Evelyn – thanks for doing this incredible amount of work!
I’m related to the Luce’s via my 4th great grandparents Francois/Francis Luce & Angelique Day. Angelique’s sister Sophia apparently married Francis’ brother John/Jean. Francis and John were apparently both mariners who worked for the Charles Robin Company in Paspebiac, Lower Canada. Do you have any info on these Luce’s?
      Best Regards, J. Winton

  4. hello there, came across your site by accident and since Luce is on our family tree and my husband’s family are from
Jersey – well ihad to read it all and congratulate you on all you have found out.I am looking at an original letter
dated 13 APRIL 1792 wwritten by Philip Robin to Captain Jean Luce Neureuhak(?) quite a few others written in Jersey French Does the firm of William Frueing which has Philip Luce Esq on it’s board in Feb 1875 mean anything ? to do with Gaspe/money probems/bankruptcy resulted in Philip rec=
eiving £1048.11.9d. Any connection. In our family William Luce 1845 – 1925 married Laura Lee Duheaume 1861 – 1909,
sister of rev.Duheaume Rector of Trinity. They had a son
William b 1894.He never married/no children. will return to your site and re-read it aain. every good wish, Beryl hyne.

    • I realize this was posted years ago. However it caught my interest. Robins had a fisher at Arichat. Arichat was an interpretation of the native place name “Nerichat” , I’ve seen it spelled many ways and maybe the reference you made to ” Captain Jean Luce Neureuhak ” is addressing Jean Luce /of/in/at Nerichat / Arichat etc. There were at least 2 different ‘John Luce’s’ in Arichat.

  5. Hello Beryl,
    Thanks for your comment.
At the moment I’m publishing basic information about each of my lines just to make sure that it’s there for my children. I’ve left the Luces behind and I’m working my way through my Lagaces, and then on to my Theriaults and Legers.Towards the end of the year I’ll come back and start posting again about the Jersey Luces.
The Fruing Luce you mention is “my” Philip Luce. I was aware of the Frueing bankruptcy connection through a local history book I own although I haven’t “dug” down into that story yet.
May I ask how you’re aware of the amount of money that Philip received? Is there something else I could be reading about this?
Thank you so much for sharing this information. The Luce line means a lot to me and my mother. I am actually named after my Luce grandmother and I don’t want her people to be forgotten.

  7. In my family tree I have a great grandfather Charles Philip Renouf (brn in Coin Motier, St Lawrence Jersey 19/7/1856). His mother was Mary Ann Blampied (brn 1/7/1832 in St Lawrence Jersey) her grandparents were Jean Blampied and Susanne Luce. It appears that Jean and Susanne never married (or were divorced) for the 1851 CI census records Susanne Luce, then aged 84, living in the same household as her son Philippe and his wife their seven children. Is this family related to yours? With best wishes Ron Churchill.

  9. I stopped researching my family tree ten years ago but stumbled on this site looking for information for someone else. I descend from Elie Luce and Elizabeth Sorsoleil’s daughter Elizabeth Luce, twin sister of Anne Charlotte. Elizabeth and her husband Peter Le Lievre emigrated aboard the ‘Elizabeth’ arriving in Sydney on 9 March 1814, as bounty immigrants contracted to an employer McPhee(?) to work on his farm in the area sorounding what is now Canberra for a period of time in exchange for their passage. A set amount of provisions were provided. I can see if I can find the copy of the original document, which I have….I think…..somewhere.

  10. I should have added that at that time they had five children who must have accompanied them on the voyage to live in what was then a very isolated area, where women were a rarity.

  13. Love your site….I am researching Phillip Luce (he would be my fifth ggrandfather) born about 1743 in Jersey. He and his brother Jean went to Conception Bay area of Newfoundland. Phillip went to Lower Island Cove and Jean went to Holyrood or Harbour Main. Your family looks promising as a possible connection…I use to think their fathers name was Jean-that was based on something I read years ago. Any idea how I can get more information? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I also have Bellville/Belleville/Belville….I am stuck on them and need some direction as to how to find them in Canada. John was born in Canada around 1830 but spent his adult life in the U.S. They lived in Minnesota and Massachusetts. Once again any ideas would be appreciated!

  14. I think I may have a relationship here, but I need some help, please! I have a John Hilliard Lewis who said he was born in Buffalo, NY @1870; his 1892 Wisconsin marriage record states his parents were Philip Lewis and Annie Ward. There were no such people in Buffalo/area at that time, or anywhere else!

The closest combination I have found is that of Philip and Annie (Ward) Lewis, living at Shippagan, Gloucester, NB at the 1891 Canada census. Luce turning into Lewis??? Middle name Hilliard from Phillipe’s first wife “Joanna Hellyer??” There is no son of Phillippe & Anne Ward called John b @1870 listed but his estimated birth date is only that, an estimate. OR was this John Hilliard the son of Phillipe John Hellyer Luce, b. @1848?? Help, please!! There’s too much coincidence here to be coincidence!

    Thank you!

    • On the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick ( Canada ) site , there are several entries for a Philip Luce that was married to a Mary Ann Vallee. One of them being the birth of their son John Luce born in Gloucester County N.B. on July 14th 1889. There are several other entries of children born to Philip and Mary Ann.

Also on that site is the record of marriage for that John Luce to an Emilie Chiasson on Nov 10 1913 in Gloucester County (Island River) as well.

Interestingly enough another son of Philip and Mary Ann Vallee “Philip Alexander Luce” ( born about 1898 ) married a Georgina Ward on Jan 27th 1919.

To add confusion on the site you will indeed also find 4 duplicate records for a Philippe Lewis ( married to a Marianne Valley ) but this are most certainly transcription errors as the ‘Philip Luce’ entries include scans of the original documents with the correctly spelled ‘Luce’

At any rate , good luck and I am sure you will find the New Brunswick Provincial Archives most interesting if you’ve not discovered them by now. http://archives.gnb.ca/Search/VISSE/Default.aspx?culture=en-CA

    • I am a direct descendant of John Hilliard Lewis. He was originally Elie Jean Luce, son of Phillipe/Philip Luce and Ann Ward. For some reason, they changed their names to Lewis, (at least some of them did) and at least in John Hilliard’s case, he left NB in about 1887/88 and went to the USA. However, these many Luces’ did not wait until they got to the USA to become Lewis’s rather than Luces. Philippe/Philip Luce, married to Ann Ward, died in 1892 and is buried in NB, but he could certainly have been the Philip and Ann Lewis in the 1891 census that you mention. John Hilliard Lewis “begat” Leonard Ward Lewis who “begat” Raymond Leslie Lewis 1925 who “begat” me, Leslie Carol Lewis, 1948. Hope this helps you; if you need more info, contact me at boudicca48@hotmail.com

Phillip went to Lower Island Cove and Jean went to Holyrood or Harbour Main and eventually a branch of this family arrived in Fleur de Lys, Newfoundland. I am wondering if there could possibly be a connection to this family. Any info would be appreciate
